The Concordia University baseball team (18-8, 6-4 NSIC) suffered a pair of losses on the first day of a four game series at Wayne State (28-11, 18-4 NSIC) on Friday afternoon in Wayne, Neb. The Bears lost the first game 17-2 before a 9-5 defeat in game two.
The Wildcats scored in all six innings of game one, jumping out with three in the first and five in the second innings, knocking starting pitcher
Matt Borman off the mound with one out in the second.
Borman took his first loss, falling to 4-1, allowing seven runs (five earned) with four hits and a walk in 1.1 innings.
The Wildcats had a 10-0 lead after four before Concordia etched a digit on the scoreboard in the fifth when
Derek Mason hit a solo home run to left field.
Concordia added another in the sixth but it was too late as the wildcats continued their offensive output en route to the 15 run victory.
The Bears jumped out on top in the second game, leading 4-1 after two innings with two-run home runs by
Andy Judkins in the first inning and
Matt Borman in the second.
The Wildcats scored three in the third to tie the score at four.
Concordia reclaimed the lead in the fourth when
Greg Winegarden produced an rbi single up the middle, scoring Mason who reached on a fielder's choice.
The Wildcats continued their offensive onslaught in the bottom of the inning, scoring two more off of starter
Blake Devries, forcing him from the contest after working three-plus innings, allowing six runs (five earned) on six hits and five walks with three strikeouts.
The Bears trailed just 6-5 after Devries left the game but were unable to mount an offensive comeback as Wayne State scored three more the rest of the way to seal the victory.
Concordia and Wayne State will square off for another doubleheader tomorrow afternoon at 1:00 in Wayne, Neb. To complete the season series.
