The concordia women's basketball team's (17-9, 14-3 nsic) ten-game winning streak came to an end friday night at wayne state (17-9, 10-7 nsic) as the wildcats defeated concordia 90-78 in rice auditorium. The bears however clinched at least a share of their second nsic regular-season title when southwest minnesota state defeated msu moorhead 76-72 in marshall, giving the bears a one game lead with one game to play.
the bears had five players score in double-figures, led by
kelly lund, who scored a career-high 26 points on 9-15 shooting from the floor, including 2-5 from three and 6-7 from the free throw line.
kali olstad and
mary schroeder each had 11 and
candace olstad and
katie laviolette added 10 each.
wayne state held a slim 39-38 at the intermission but outscored the bears 14-4 through the first five minutes of the second half to take a 53-42 lead at 14:12 and would lead by as much as 26 points with 7:12 to play in the second half.
the bears shot 26-58 (.448) for the game from the floor, including 8-22 (.364) from three point range and 18-23 (.768) from the free throw line.
wayne state went 0-6 from beyond the arc in the second half, but shot 25-30 from the free throw line in the second half. The finished the game making 28-57 (.491) from the field and 30-35 (.857) from the free throw line. Erin mccormick finished with a double-double, scoring 24 points and grabbing 10 rebounds to lead wayne state.
the wildcats outrebounded the bears 33-32. Laviolette the bears with a team-high nine rebounds. Concordia commited 14 turnovers compared to 12 for wsc.
the bears hold the tie-break with msu moorhead and will host the nsic tournament on mar. 3-4 at the gangelhoff center. The first round of the nsic tournament will be wed., feb 28 at 6:00 at the gangelhoff center. The opponent and tournament pairings will be announced late saturday night after all games are complete.
