Concordia drops two in season opener to Augustana

The Concordia baseball team dropped a pair of non-conference games to Augustana College at the HHH Metrodome Sunday night, losing the opener 4-2 and the nightcap 5-3.

The Bears took the lead in the third inning of game one after James Kramer reached on a passed ball after striking out. He was advanced to second by Greg Winegarden and scored on a single to left field by Matt Borman. Borman would score two batters later when Tony Boxwell singled to left field.

Senior Matt Borman started his first game in three years for the Bears, allowing two earned runs on five hits, while striking out three in four innings. Sophomore Jake Schmidt came in in the fifth inning and gave up two unearned runs, one in the fifth and one in the sixth to take the loss.

The Bears finished the game with only four hits, with Jake Waldman getting two of those, including a dome double to centerfield. Defensively, the Bears struggles, committing four errors in their first game of the season.

Augustana scored their four runs on nine hits, but left nine runners on base.

In game two, after Augustana scored two first inning runs, Borman led off with a monster home run to the upper deck in right field to cut the Vikings lead to 2-1, but Augustana would pick up another run in the fourth inning.

Waldman led off the fifth inning with his third double of the day and score two batters later when Tony Boxwell hit a home run over the left-centerfield fence to cut the lead to 4-3. The Bears had their chances, leaving the bases loaded in the fourth and sixth innings. For the game, they left nine runners stranded.

The Bears scored three runs on five hits and one Augustana error, while Augustana scored their five runs on only three hits with four Concordia errors. Eric Utoft took the loss, allowing four runs, with only one earned in 3.2 innings, striking out three and walking three. Blake Devries gave up one earned run on one walk with a walk and four strikeouts in his first appearance in a Concordia uniform.

The Bears will return to action on feb. 24th in a double-header against Gannon in Fort Myers, Florida on their spring break trip.
