Concordia overcomes slow start to defeat bemidji state 75-62

Sophomore craig heiman (marshall, wi) scored 17 first half points in leading concordia (7-2, 2-1 nsic) to a 75-62 win in nsic action over bemidji state (3-7, 1-3 nsic) at the gangelhoff center saturday night.

the beavers jumped out to an early 10-0 lead before the golden bears got on the scoreboard on a free throw by chuol chany (sr., des moines, ia) at 16:59 of the first half.

concordia chipped away at the beaver lead over the next seven minutes and took their first lead at 18-17 with 8:13 to play on a on a jump shot by mike cunningham (so., minneapolis, mn).

the two teams traded baskets and the lead six times over the next four minutes with concordia taking the lead for good on a james metcalf (sr., killeen, tx) basket at 4:18, giving the golden bears a 26-25 lead.

heiman scored 12 of the last 18 points for concordia to end the half, shooting 6-9 from the floor, including 3-4 from three point range. He added six rebounds in the opening frame.

the golden bears extended their lead in the second half to as many points as 19 at 74-55 with 2:57 to play.

three players scored in double-figures for the golden bears led by heiman with 23 points. Metcalf added 11 points on 4-7 shooting, including 1-1 from beyond the arc and 2-2 from the line. He also led the team in rebounds with seven.

cunningham (right) finished with 11 points on 4-10 from the field and 3-3 from the free throw line. He added five rebounds and a team-high six assists.

the golden bears finished the game shooting 50.0% (28-56) from the floor and 5-10 from three point range. They were 14-22 (63.6%) from the free throw line.

the beavers shot 25-52 (48.1%) from the floor, but were held to 3-15 (20%) from heyond the arc. They converted 9-20 (45.0%) from the charity stripe.

cu committed 14 turnovers, but caused 20 bemidji state turnovers. The golden bears turned those turnovers into 24 points, compared to 13 for the beavers off cu turnovers.

concordia will return to action on thursday, dec. 13 to face #12 st. Cloud state at halenbeck hall at 7:00 in st. Cloud.
