Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Golden bears struggle on the road at #8 st. Cloud state

Concordia university's (7-3) bid to snap #8 st. Cloud state's (9-0) undefeated start evaporated quickly in a 72-57 road loss to the huskies at halenbeck hall in st. Cloud, minn. On thursday evening.

concordia junior guard matt cadwell (st. Paul, minn.) scored the first bucket of the game on a layup just over two minutes into the game to give cu an early lead.

but matt schneck tipped-in david dreas' miss on the next possession for st. Cloud state to tie the score and after a pair of misses on the offensive end for concordia by freshman forward chris pfeiffer (hopkins, minn.), scsu's jesse fischer drilled a jumper to put the huskies in the lead for good.

the huskies pushed the lead to as much as 17 twice in the first half, 37-20 and 39-22.

but a late surge by concordia, a three-point play by cadwell and a buzzer-beater jumper by pfeiffer, brought the game within reach at the half, 39-27 with momentum on their side.

they carried that momentum into the second half, going on an 11-2 spurt early in the frame to cut the deficit back to five with a layup by senior guard jason birr (burnsville, minn.).

after a scsu timeout, the huskies would score the next 11 points to reclaim a double-digit lead of 16 points, 56-40 with just under 12 minutes to play.

the golden bears never cut the lead back to single-digits as the huskies clamped down on defense.

after shooting just 40.7% (11-27) in the first half, concordia shot an efficient 60.0% (12-20) in the second half, but only managed 20 shots.

concordia was outmatched on the glass as st. Cloud state grabbed 37 rebounds, 14 on the offensive end while the golden bears managed just 21 total rebounds, four offensive.

cadwell led the golden bears with 17 points, shooting 5-12 from the floor and 6-7 at the line but committed six of cu's 20 turnovers.

sophomore forward craig heiman (marshall, wis.) added 14 points while senior guard james metcalf (killeen, texas) was 5-7 from the field for 10 points with a team-best seven rebounds.

dreas led the huskies with 21 points while schneck collected a double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds.

concordia returns to action next thursday, december 20, when they host augustana college at 7 p.m. Before a rematch with the huskies on sunday, december 30 at 4 p.m.
