Beavers roll past concordia 47-21 in bemidji

Bemidji state (5-4, 4-3 nsic) cruise to a 47-21 win over concordia (3-7, 2-6 nsic) despite a pair of touchdowns by tyrone ruffin (right) and nearly 300 yards of offense by kole goodchild.

the beavers got on the board first on a 57-yard punt return for a touchdown by anthony schreiber at 10:48 of the first quarter.

after a concordia punt, the beavers got the ball back. On a third down, bears defensive back dario moore intercepted the ball on the bears 35 and returned it 50 yards to the beaver 15. But the ball was called back because of an offsides penalty. The bears defense held, forcing a bsu punt that pinned the bears on their own six yard line.

on the first play from scrimmage, goodchild completed a 19 yard pass to antwon williams, only to have the play called back on an offensive holding in the endzone. The result of the penalty was a safety and a 9-0 lead for bemidji state at 6:43 of the first quarter.

the bears were forced to kick off to the beavers after the saftey and bemidji state would take the ball 50 yards on seven plays to go up 16-0 with 3:41 left in the first quarter. They would extend the lead to 23-0 on a 24 yard pass play by cory wardrope to schreiber at 9:41 of the second quarter.

concordia got on the board at 5:56 of the second quarter on a three-yard reception by ruffin in the back corner of the endzone over two beaver defenders, capping an impressive 13 play, 67 yard drive for the bears. Concordia kept the drive alive on a fake punt on 4th and 10, converting on a pass from hayden vavra to punter tg schoenberg (left) for 19 yards.

after the defense held bemidji state and got the ball back for the offense, concordia cut the lead to 23-14 with 47 seconds left in the first half on a four-yard pass from antwon williams, who had taken a handoff from goodchild and run to the rigth side, before making a pass to ruffins in the endzone, capping a 10-play, 86 yard drive. The highlight of the drive was a 41-yard pass completion by eric tonkin (right).

with the score 23-14 just before the half, the concordia defense blocked a 31 yard field goal as time expired, but were called offsides by another penalty. The beavers converter the 26 yard field goal with no time of the clock, to take a 26-14 halftime lead.

they would extend the lead to 33-14 just three minutes into the second half, taking the opening kick 76 yards on ten plays in 3:06.

goodchild scored the bears final touchdown with 6:09 remaining in the third quarter on a two-yard run over the right side, cutting the lead to 33-21.

the concordia defense held the beavers, and following a bsu punt, the bears antwon williams fumbled the ball on their own 14 yard line. Bsu would convert two-plays later and a take a 40-21 lead and 3:26 of the third and carry that into the fourth quarter.

bemidji state started the fourth quarter with the ball and drove 71 yards on six plays to take the 47-21 lead with 13:40 to play. The bears had one more scoring chance with 6:09 to play, goodchild completed a 24 yard pass to williams, followed by a 28 yard completion to tonkin. With a first and goal on the bsu two-yard line, the bears failed to convert and turned the ball over on downs with 2:40 to play.

bemidji state ran the clock out for the win.

on the day, concordia totalled 354 yards of total offense on 79 plays. Goodchild (left) was 23-44 for 284 yards and a touchdown. He spread the ball out to five receivers, with tonkin catching six balls for 97 yards and williams getting six receptions for 91 yards. Ruffin finished with three catches for 18 yards and two touchdowns.

on the ground, kama johnson ran the ball 15 times for 38 yards. The offense was held to just 37 yards on 32 attempts. Goodchild carried the ball 14 times for six yards.

the bears defense allowed 430 yards of total offense, with the beavers rushing for 198 and passing for 232. duy huyhn (left) led the defense with 11 tackles (six solo, five assisted), while joey lehman (below) added ten (six solo, four assisted). ben schumacher added six, including two for loss and 1.5 sacks.

the bears will finish their 2007 season on nov. 9 at the nsic metrodome classic against minn. Crookston. Game time is set for 4:00.
