Golden bears fall at marquette

Concordia-st. Paul made it interesting in a 91-60 loss at marquette university on saturday afternoon at the al mcguire center in milwaukee, wis. Senior center amanda behnke (eagan, minn.) converted a layup off a jamie jones (so., g, mounds view, minn.) pass to cut the golden eagle lead to 41-36 with just over 18 minutes to play in the second half.

but, marquette would hold off the golden bears with a 9-2 run to push the lead back to 13, 51-38 with 15:44 to play.

leading 66-52 with 8:54 to play, marquette opened up a 16-1 run over the next 4:38 to put concordia away.

the golden bears were led by senior point guard katie laviolette (manitowoc, wis.) who had a team-high 16 points and a game-high nine assists. She also had four steals, five rebounds and a block and finished 5-10 from the floor and 6-8 from the line.

behnke finished with a double-double, scoring 14 points while grabbing 10 rebounds (four offensive).

candace olstad (jr., f, elgin, minn.) added 11 points and five rebounds while jones came off the bench with 10 points and five rebounds. kali olstad (so., g, elgin, minn.) had six rebounds in 15 minutes off the bench.

marquette was led by krystal ellis with 19 points, five assists and four steals. Five golden eagles scored in double-figures.

concordia turned the ball over 22 times, leading to a 28-7 marquette advantage in points off turnovers and 23-4 in fastbreak scoring. Marquette also dominated the paint by a 50-22 margin, and held a 25-13 margin in second chance scoring.

the golden bears will now prepare for the start of the regular season when they host the wildwood lodge tip-off classic on nov. 16-17 at the gangelhoff center, facing missouri valley college and northern michigan in the two day event.
