Long range shooting propels golden bears to fourth-straight win

Concordia-st. Paul (4-0) remained undefeated thanks to drilling 13 three-pointers, 10 coming off the bench in a 91-72 win over st. Mary's university (tx) on saturday evening at the emarald beach holiday inn turkey shootout hosted by texas am kingsville. The golden bears pulled away from the rattlers with a 21-4 run spanning 9:29. The run took a 43-40 concordia lead with 1:43 in the first half to a commanding 64-44 deficit with 12:14 to play in the game.

as a team, the golden bears connected at a 56.5% (13-23) clip from three-point range with the bench hitting 62.5% (10-16) between three players: junior forward abby nielsen and sophomore guards kali olstad and jamie jones.

nielsen was perfect on the night with 16 points, hitting 5-5 from the field and 4-4 from three-point range while hitting both of her free throws. K.olstad, who hit five three's last night, nearly equaled that effort tonight, connecting on 4-7 from downtown, 5-8 from the floor for 14 points. Jones added a 2-5 three-point shooting effort and finished 3-7 from the floor for nine points while adding three rebounds, two assists and two steals in 30 minutes.

in all, concordia's bench tallied 39 points compared to just 21 for st. Mary's.

seniors amanda behnke and katie laviolette continued to perform at high levels as behnke poured in 24 points with laviolette dishing out 12 assists to just one turnover. Behnke was 7-11 from the floor and 10-13 at the line and grabbed seven rebounds in just 24 minutes. Laviolette recorded her first double-double of the season with 11 points. She played 37 minutes, adding three rebounds and two steals.

concordia also had five scorers in double-figures for the second consecutive game with junior forward candace olstad adding 13 points on 5-8 shooting, hitting a pair of three's in her only attempts. She had six rebounds, three steals and a pair of assists before fouling out after 30 minutes of action.

as a team, the golden bears shot 50.9% (29-57) from the floor and made 76.9% (20-26) from the free throw line. They held st. Mary's to 40.0% (22-55) shooting and a meager 26.7% (4-15) from behind the arc.

the rattlers were led by natalie gamez who scored 24 points, hitting 12-14 at the free throw line. Rachel jones added 19 points and st. Mary’s outrebounded concordia 40-31 including doubling-up on the offensive glass with a 14-7 margin.

the first half was played tighter, with five ties and 11 lead changes but the golden bears never trailed in the second half.

kali olstad and amanda behnke were each selected to the all-tournament team as was rachel jones from st. Mary's. K.olstad drained nine three-pointers in the two games while behnke averaged 18.0 points. Katie laviolette posted 26 assists (13.0 per game) in the two game classic with just two turnovers, one in each game.

concordia is off until next saturday, december 1, when they open their northern sun slate at home against msu moorhead at 6:00 p.m. At the gangelhoff center.
