Heiman keeps concordia undefeated with 27 points against macalester

Sophomore forward craig heiman poured in 27 points in 36 minutes to lead concordia university (2-0) past macalester college (0-2) 80-65 in the wildwood lodge tip-off classic on saturday evening at the gangelhoff center.

the marshall, wis. Native was 9-16 from the floor, 3-6 from three-point range and 6-6 at the line while collecting seven rebounds to keep the golden bears undefeated.

macalester's brian ranwick drilled one of his three three-pointers to get the scots off to a quick 3-0 lead.

heiman scored first 39 seconds later at the 19:01 mark to get concordia on the board and junior guard matt cadwell had a tip-in at 18:18 to give concordia the lead, 4-3. He would add a free throw but macalaster's tom conboy hit a jumper on a pass from ranwick to knot the score at five with 16:11 to play.

that's when cadwell really took over, leading the golden bears to a 15-0 run, scoring seven points during the spurt with freshman forward matt hackl adding four.

the run spanned 3:46 and gave concordia a 20-5 lead with 12:10 to play in the half.

after macalester countered with six-straight points of their own to cut the gap to 20-11, the golden bears went on a 10-0 streak with heiman scoring five points and hackl nailing a three.

senior center chuol chany put the exclamation point on the run with a fastbreak alley-oop slam on a no-look pass in the lane from cadwell.

concordia held a 32-13 lead with 4:24 to play in the half and would head into the locker room after a heiman tip-in at the buzzer leading 42-18, a commanding 24 point deficit.

heiman had 14 first half points with cadwell scoring 10 and chany adding six points and nine rebounds while hackl contributed all seven of his points during the two big runs.

concordia shot 50.0% (18-36) in the opening half while stifling macalester to just 24.1% (7-29) shooting. The scots' main threat, conboy, was held to 3-10 shooting and eight points, four rebounds in 16 minutes of action.

in the second half, macalester used a 12-2 run to get back into the game, cutting the score to 54-44 with 11:38 to play when heiman drilled a three-pointer to push the lead back to 13 for concordia.

after sophomore guard mike cunningham drove the lane and spun off his defender for a finger roll, concordia led 62-51 but macalester would score six unanswered to cut the deficit to five points, 62-57 with just 6:39 to play.

it was the closest macalester had been since 11-5 at the 14:58 mark in the first half, a 28:31 span of action.

but the scots would never come closer and concordia went on an 8-0 string from the 3:04 mark to 1:37 when heiman delivered yet another tip-in to put concordia on top 78-62 before eventually closing out mac.

cadwell scored 20 points on 8-14 shooting and had six rebounds and six assists. Chany collected a double-double with 11 points, 14 rebounds (five offensive), three blocks and three steals.

cunningham added eight points, four assists, four steals and three rebounds.

macalester was led by conboy, who managed to finish with 21 points and nine rebounds despite forcing numerous shots. Abe woldeslassie had 17 points and five assists while ranwick scored 15 points, hitting 3-7 from three-point range. Woldeslassie also delivered three three's in eight attempts.

concordia dominated down low with a 44-26 rebounding margin and outscoring macalester 46-16 in the point and 15-8 in second chance points.

there was just one tie and one lead change in the game.

concordia returns to action on tuesday, nov. 20 when they travel to mankato, minn. To take on regional rival minnesota state university at 7:00 p.m.
