Golden bears unable to keep up with mavericks


concordia university (2-1) suffered their first defeat of the season, falling 89-72 at minnesota state university (3-0) at the taylor center in mankato, minn. On tuesday evening. Senior center chuol chany (des moines, iowa) led the golden bears with a double-double, scoring 19 points and grabbing 11 rebounds before fouling out late in the game.

the golden bears went on an 8-0 first half run to take a 32-24 lead to take the early momentum off of four points by junior guard matt cadwell while sophomore forward craig heiman and freshman forward chris pfeiffer each had baskets.

the mavericks would respond by closing out the half on a 16-2 run as the golden bears trailed 40-34 at the break.

the second half started with minnesota state's jadee jones drilling a three-pointer. Jones would score a game-high 26 points with his second-half opening three-pointer giving the mavericks a nine point lead.

concordia would score four unanswered off of a matt hackl jumper and a chany layup.

but msu pushed the lead to 11 a few minutes later after six-straight points, giving them a 51-40 lead with 17:31 to play.

concordia responded with their second 8-0 run of the game to cut the deficit to three when chany delivered a three-point play with 16:13 remaining.

but the mavericks went on a 15-3 run to take a commanding 66-51 lead with 13:05 left.

from there, the golden bears would never cut the gap closer than 13 points the rest of the way.

chany scored his 19 points on 9-14 shooting and also had four blocks and three steals in 34 minutes. Sophomore guard mike cunningham added 16 points, four rebounds, three assists, two blocks and two steals and was 6-7 from the floor and 4-4 from the free throw line.

concordia's two scoring leaders, heiman and cadwell, combined to shoot just 7-19 from the field for 23 points. Cadwell scored 13 with five assists and three steals but was 3-10 from the floor. He did finish 7-8 at the foul line, however. Heiman was 4-9 from the field for 10 points and pulled down six rebounds. They combined for 11 turnovers with cadwell committing six.

the mavericks also received a boost from atila santos, who scored 21 points and jake morrow who added 17 while preson whitaker contributed a season-high 12.

concordia committed 22 turnovers but managed to outscore the mavericks 22-21 off turnovers and 40-36 in the paint.

concordia returns to action this saturday, december 1, when they host wisconsin-river falls at 7 p.m. At the gangelhoff center.
