The concordia women's basketball team (8-8, 5-2 nsic) used a dominating first half to cruise to a 65-43 win over upper iowa (6-8, 2-5 nsic) in conference action saturday night in fayette, iowa.
upper iowa scored the first two points of the game, but the bears outscored the peacocks 39-12 the rest of the first half to take a commanding 39-14 halftime lead. The bears would lead by as many as 30 (46-16) with 16:46 in the second half. Upper iowa would put an 11-0 run together to cut the lead to 46-27 with 11:45 left, but would get no closer in the game.
amanda behnke was nearly perfect in the first half, going 4-4 from the field and 2-3 from the free throw line to finish with ten points at the intermission. She finished the game with a team-high 15 points on 5-8 from the file and 5-7 from the charity stripe.
candace olstad was equally impressive finishing with nine points in the first half on 4-5 shooting and 1-1 from three point range. She would finish with 14 points, four rebounds and two steals.
kali olstad also scored in double-figures for the first second time in her career, dropping in 11 points, with three-three point field goals and five rebounds.
katie laviolette just missed her second double-double of the season, but finished with a solid all-around performance, finishing with ten points, nine assists, five rebounds and four steals.
the bears defense proved to be the difference as concordia was able to score 34 points off turnovers, while limiting the peacocks to only four points off turnovers, as cu committed a season-low eight turnovers, while forcing 19 uiu turnovers.
concordia finished the game making 21-53 (41.5%) from the field, including 8-19 (42.3%) from three point range. They held upper iowa to only 15-47 (31.9%) and a season-low 1-12 (8.3%) from behind the arc. Concordia converted 13-19 (68.4%) from the free throw line, while the peacocks were 12-16 (75%).
the bears return home on jan. 19th to face southwest minnesota state in nsic action. Game time is 6:00 in the gangelhoff center.
