Bears defeat Southwest Minnesota State; face Wayne in championships

Senior second baseman Galen Wetzell knocked in a two-run double to right field in the top of the eighth inning to give Concordia University (29-10-1) a 5-4 lead as they went on to defeat Southwest Minnesota state 7-4 to advance to the NSIC Tournament Championship game to be played this afternoon against Wayne State in Wayne, Nebraska. The game will have a start time of approximately 3:00 p.m.

Wetzell added another two-run double to right in the ninth inning as he finished 3-5 with two doubles and four rbi in the ballgame. Senior left fielder Chris Duda also added three hits in the victory.

Freshman pitcher Jacob Schmidt (right) gets the victory for the Bears as he worked seven innings, allowing four runs (two earned) on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts.

Fellow freshman Kirk Ingram (left) game in out of the bullpen to earn a two inning save as he shutout the Mustangs, allowing just two hits in the effort.

A win for the Golden Bears sets up the second championship game between the teams as the Wildcats have yet to be defeated in the double-elimination tournament. On the line is the NSIC's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Central Region Tournament. The Golden Bears currently hold the ninth ranking in the latest regional poll while the Wildcats are fifth. The top six teams in the final regional rankings will compete in the regional tournament.
