Concordia University (14-7, 1-3 NSIC) was swept by Wayne State (20-8, 8-0 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at Bob Barnes field in St. Paul. Concordia fell 17-6 in the first game before being shutout 11-0 in game two.
The Wildcats jumped on the board early in game one with a three run home run but Concordia answered in the bottom of the first when Erik Quarberg smoked a blazing line drive to dead centerfield off the top of the wall, scoring Chris Duda who reached on a leadoff single.
Wayne State added two more in the second to grab a 5-1 lead but the Bears added another to cut it to 5-2 when Galen Wetzell drove in Jacob Waldman with a single up the middle.
But the Wildcats didn't slow down as they scored at least a run in each of the first six innings en route to the 17-6 win. Greg Winegarden delivered a bases clearing double to right centerfield, knocking in three runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Geoff Bray took the loss for Concordia, falling to 3-2 on the year after working four innings, allowing six earned runs on seven hits with one walk and a pair of strikeouts. Joe Davoli worked the final 1.1 innings of the game and retired all four batters he faced.
In the second game, theWildcats sprinted out to a 6-0 lead after two innings to set the tone for another decisive victory.
Starting pitcher Eric Utoft worked six innings and allowed just four earned runs but 10 Wildcats scored on him as the Bears made four errors in the field in a tough loss. Ryan Fixell worked the seventh inning and allowed a run on two hits. Utoft falls to 2-3 on the season with the loss.
Outfielders Chris Duda and Alex Kubal each stole bases for the Bears as they tried to spark rallies with aggressive running. The Bears had six hits as a team in game two - all singles and no one had a multi-hit performance in either game.
The Bears and Wildcats take the field for two more tomorrow afternoon at noon at Bob Barnes field as CU looks for a sweep to even up the series.
