Late rally falls short in game two as Wildcats sweep series over Bears

Concordia University (14-9, 1-5 NSIC) dropped the season series to Wayne State (22-8-1, 10-0 NSIC) as the Wildcats swept the Bears for the second straight day, winning game one 7-0 before edging CU 10-8 in the second game.

Freshman centerfielder Alex Kubal delivered arguably the biggest hit of his career when he belted a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning in game two to give Concordia their first lead of the four game series against Wayne State, a 6-5 edge.

But the Wildcats rallied with two outs in the fifth for a four run inning and halted a bases loaded rally when senior catcher Bobby Meier was cut down at the plate from right field as he tried to score from second on junior Andy Judkins (right) base hit. Judkins drove in senior pinch runner Aaron Schmitz from third base as the Bears pulled with a run, 9-8.

But the Bears were retired in order in the seventh inning after surrendering an insurance run to wsc in the top half of the inning.

Aside from his dramatic three-run blast, Kubal also made a dazzling diving catch in centerfield and went 3-6 at the plate with a double in the doubleheader.

Sophomore John Maciej (left) came off the bench and delivered a pinch hit, two-run double.

Freshman Jacob Schmidt (right) started on the hill for Concordia and took the loss, dropping to 0-1. He went five innings allowing nine runs (five earned) on seven hits with five strikeouts. He was relieved by freshman Ted Farni who worked two innings, allowing a pair of hits and one unearned run with one strikeout.

In the first game, the Bears were held to just three hits - all doubles - but were unable to convert the extra base hits into runs as they were held scoreless.

Junior Jacob Campion started and worked six innings, allowing five runs (four earned) on nine hits while striking out a pair without issuing a walk. He took the loss and falls to 0-2 on the season.

The Golden Bears return to action on Tuesday, April 11 when they travel north to take on Minnesota Duluth at 2 p.m.
