Concordia University (14-5) came back from an 8-3 deficit in the second game when they rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the fifth inning en route to an 11-8 win in the second game following a 3-1 win in the first game over Minnesota Duluth (6-15) on Wednesday afternoon at Bob Barnes Field in St. Paul, Minnesota.
The Bears jumped on the Bulldogs early in the first game when left fielder
Chris Duda lifted a leadoff home run over the fence in left center field, his fourth of the season to put the Bears on top 1-0.
The Bulldogs answered with a run in the top of the second but freshman center fielder
Alex Kubal punched out his first career home run, a two-run shot that gave the Bears a 3-1 lead.
That was all that starting pitcher
Rob Maslowski would need as he cruised through six innings, allowing just the one run while scattering six hits and a pair of walks with three strikeouts to pick up the win. The victory sends his record to 1-0.
Freshman
Ja
cob Schmidt was called in from the bullpen in the seventh inning for the save as he retired retired all three batters he faced recording one strikeout in the process. The save was his third of the year.
Concordia jumped on the board first in the second game, sparked by a leadoff double by Duda. Duda was advanced to third and then came in to score on an rbi groundout by first baseman
Erik Quarberg. The inning wasn't over as catcher
Bobby Meier (left) stepped up and drilled a home run to left center field to put the Bears ahead 2-0 after one.
Concordia made it 3-0 in the second when second baseman
Jacob Waldman hit the first of two home runs on the day.
But UMD rallied with back-to-back four run innings to take a commanding 8-3 lead after four.
But the Golden Bears bats woke up in a big way as they sent 11 batters to the plate to face three different pitchers. After a quick out, the top of Concordia's order went to work as Duda and designated hitter
John Maciej drew back-to-back walks before Quarberg picked up his second rbi of the contest when he drilled a double to center field, setting up Meier with runners on 2nd and 3rd with one out. Meier imitated Quarberg and smashed another double just to the right of where Quarberg's smash landed, driving in a pair.
Third baseman
Mason Reinhart followed with a walk and right fielder
Andy Judkins drove in Quarberg with an rbi single to left center. Shortstop
Greg Winegarden narrowly escaped an inning-ending double play but scored Reinhart on the play while Judkins was retired at second. Waldman added a homerun in the inning and everyone that stepped up to the plate either reached base or scored for Concordia.
The rally for the Bears gave them an 11-8 lead heading into the final two frames.
Freshman
Kirk Ingram was lights out in relief as he worked 1.2 perfect innings to earn the win, improving his record to 3-0 while fellow freshman
Ted Farni picked up his first career save as he threw two innings of shutout ball, allowing a pair of hits while striking out one and walking one.
Meier had a big day for CU as he went 4-7 with two doubles, a home run, three rbi and two runs in the series. Waldman jacked his first two home runs of the season, going 2-6 and Duda went 3-6 with a walk, three runs an rbi, a double and a homer.
The Bears return to action this weekend when they play host to NSIC foe Wayne State for a pair of doubleheaders on Saturday and Sunday.
