Bears go 0-1-1 against St. Cloud State - teams combine for 11 home runs on windy afternoon

Concordia University (19-10-1) was unable to rally past St. Cloud State (7-23-1) on Wednesday afternoon (and early evening) as the Bears were defeated in the first game 10-7 before drawing a 16-16 10-inning tie in the second game that was called due to darkness at Bob Barnes field in St. Paul.

The Huskies jumped on the Bears for a three run first inning in game one, but the Bears answered with three of their own in the bottom of the inning capped by a two-run double to right field by Mason Reinhart.

The Bears would fall behind again in the third as SCSU scored one; but CU got a pair of solo home runs from Bobby Meier and Reinhart in the bottom half to grab their first lead of the game. Meier's home run to leadoff the inning, was his second of the year while Reinhart's one out shot was his fifth.

St. Cloud state reclaimed the lead in the fourth with two runs to go ahead 6-5, but Concordia once again responded in the bottom of the fifth when Tony Boxwell drilled a pinch hit rbi single to centerfield to knot the score at six.

CU and SCSU each scored one in the sixth to bring a 7-7 tie into the final frame.

The Huskies did the damage with an rbi double and a two-run home run to take the 10-7 lead before eventually sealing the victory.

St. Cloud State grabbed the first lead in the second game right off the bat with a run in the top of the first, but this time the Bears bit back with four in the bottom of the inning, highlighted by a three-run shot to right by Boxwell.

The Huskies responded with an eight-run second inning to grab a convincing 9-4 lead, knocking not only starter Rob Maslowski from the game, but also reliever Bryan Bach. The duo combined to surrender nine runs on eight hits with two walks.

The Huskies weren't done as they scored three more in the third to grab a 12-4 lead after two and a half innings.

CU was down, but they weren't out as they answered back in the bottom of the third with three runs before notching three more in the fourth highlighted by a two-run homer to right by Chris Duda, his seventh home run of the year. They added one in the fifth when Alex Kubal lined a shot over the left field fence for his third home run, and a pair in the sixth while letting in just one run to tie the score at 13-13.

The Bears and huskies' bullpens dueled for the next three innings as neither offense could score in the seventh, eighth or ninth.

SCSU exploded for three runs in the top of the tenth inning to take a commanding 16-13 lead heading into the bottom of the inning.

Andy Judkins stepped up in the bottom of the inning and laced a double to left center to set up a one-out, two-run shot to straight away center by Erik Quarberg to cut the score to 16-15.

With one out and trailing by a run, Reinhart drew a walk and John Maciej singled. Nick Davis and Seth Sneider, respectively, came off the bench to pinch run and Davis came around to score the tying run when Greg Winegarden sliced a single to right field.

The rally stalled when CU grounded into a double play, ending the inning and the ballgame when the umpires and coaches agreed conditions were too dark to play another frame.

Ryan Fixell came on in relief and worked 4.1 innings while holding the Huskies to four runs on nine hits with a pair of strikeouts. But after surrendering three runs with no outs in the third, he settled down and worked four innings with only one run allowed to keep Concordia in the game.

Kirk Ingram relieved Fixell with four more innings, allowing three runs (two earned) on four hits with two strikeouts.

In the doubleheader, Reinhart and Boxwell were each 4-6 with a double and home run. Reinhart scored four and had four rbi while Boxwell had five rbi and one run. Judkins went 6-10 with three doubles and scored four runs. Duda was 2-9 with a pair of long balls, giving him a team-leading seven on the year while Quarberg was 2-6, scoring five runs and driving in three.

The Bears return to action this weekend when they travel to take on Bemidji state for a four game weekend series as they look to secure a berth in the NSIC baseball tournament.
