Concordia university (25-11) went 2-1 on the first of two days at the concordia tournament played at dunning field in st. Paul, minn. The bears were upended 1-0 in the first game by st. Cloud state before holding off north dakota 5-4 in the second game. They finished off the long day by blanking #11 nebraska-omaha 4-0.
in the first game, the huskies held the bears to just two hits as cu's scoreless streak was extended to 20 innings. Senior
kristen schmidt hurled six strong innings, allowing just one run on four hits while striking out four and walking one.
in game two, the bears snapped their scoreless drought in the first inning when
tracie enzler (right)came around to score when the fighting sioux made an errant throw after
vanessa dufresne beat out a bunt back to the mound.
amanda yurek pounded a double to right center the following play but the bears were unable to scratch out a second run.
the lead extended to 4-0 after a three run fourth inning sparked by an rbi double to center by schmidt. In the next inning, cu extended the lead to 5-1 when dufresne (right) smashed a triple down the left field line to leadoff the inning. She came across on
kristin linell's rbi base hit.
junior pitcher
mandy turba (left) got the start for the bears and improved to 12-3 on the season after working six innings allowing four runs (one earned) on six hits with four strikeouts.
schmidt came on in relief to notch her third save as she struck out the side in the seventh.
in the third game, the bears scored in the first yet again as enzler lifted a deep fly ball to the left field fence. She blazed around the bases to reach with a leadoff triple and scored when yurek (right) drilled a one out double to left field.
concordia added two more in the third and one in the fourth but the enzler run was all schmidt needed as she coasted past the mavericks to record the shutout victory.
the win for schmidt (left) improves her to 13-8 on the season as she allowed just three hits without a walk.
for the day, schmidt pitched in all three games, recording 14 innings while allowing just one run on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts. At the plate she finished 3-8 with two rbi and a run. Linell was 3-9 with a pair of rbi as well. Enzler and dufresne also each had three hits.
the bears return for the second and final day of the concordia tournament tomorrow afternoon at 12:30 and 2:15 when they face msu moorhead and minnesota duluth, respectively.
