Concordia upends wayne state

Concordia university (14-10, 3-8 nsic) defeated wayne state (7-14, 5-6 nsic) 66-56 on friday evening at the gangelhoff center in st. Paul, minn. To snap an eight game nsic losing streak. Senior forward ty thomas led the golden bears with 22 points.

the bears outscored wayne state 38-25 and converted 15-27 (55.6%) of their shots in the second half in overcoming a 31-28 halftime deficit. Junior guard kyle marxhausen converted a pair of fast break layups, both assisted by thomas to break the wildcat press while thomas was 4-4 at the stripe in the final 30 seconds to seal the victory for concordia.

thomas scored his team-high 22 points in 29 minutes of play on 8-15 shooting including 6-7 at the line. He also grabbed six rebounds and had three assists.

sophomore guard jason birr was a defensive nightmare for the wildcats, drawing five charges in the contest. Birr finished the game with three points, four rebounds and three assists while not committing a foul in 24 minutes of solid effort.

junior center drew shepp added 11 points and five rebounds (all offensive) and was 4-8 from the field despite being limited to 14 minutes due to foul trouble.

junior forward marlon walker was the third golden bear in double-figures with 10 points and four rebounds in a team-high 34 minutes of action.

concordia improves to 10-0 when outrebounding opponents as they held a 38-32 edge on the glass and a 16-9 margin on the offensive glass.

they also won the turnover margin, forcing the wildcats to 16 turnovers while committing just nine. The bears' nine turnovers equaled wayne state point guard dallas hodges personal total of nine.

concordia returns to the floor tomorrow evening when they play host to southwest minnesota state, who was defeated tonight at winona state. Game time is 8 p.m., immediately following the women's game that starts at 6 p.m.
