Bears cruise past beavers in bemidji

the golden bears men's basketball team (5-1, 2-0 nsic) continued their hot start as they coasted to a 72-55 win at bemidji state (0-10, 0-3 nsic) on friday evening to record their first-ever win at bsu gymnasium. The bears used a balanced attack in all phases of the game with just two players reaching double-figures in scoring while being led on the glass off the bench.

senior guard kyle marxhausen led cu's offense with 16 points while adding four rebounds and two steals. Senior point guard joey peel poured in 11 points and dished a team-high seven assists as he sparked the concordia offense and added two steals on the defensive end.

on the glass, junior chuol chany pulled down a team-high 11 rebounds (five offensive). He added four points on 2-4 shooting.

the bears outscored the beavers 36-15 off the bench led by a pair of freshmen, mike cunningham and craig heiman with nine each. All of cunningham's nine points came in the second half, shooting 4-4 from the field and knocking down a three. Guard jason birr added seven points and a pair of steals.

the golden bears finished the evening shooting 40.0% (22-55) from the field while holding bsu to just 36.7% (22-60).

more importantly, concordia got to the free throw line early and often throughout the contest, finishing 21-34 (61.8%) while holding bsu to just 11 free throw attempts, hitting 72.7% (8-11).

the beavers were led by alex smith who finished with 15 points, six rebounds and five blocks while sergej bascow added a double-double with 12 points and 13 rebounds.

the bears return to action tomorrow evening when they travel to take on minnesota, crookston at 6:00 p.m.
