Freshman
Krysta Schmitt drilled the game-tying goal in the 61st minute and the Golden Bear defense was stellar throughout as Concordia University (3-7-1, 2-3-1 NSIC) came away with a tie against Northern State (7-2-1, 3-2-1 NSIC) in Northern Sun action on Sunday afternoon at Concordia Field.
Schmitt's goal was assisted by senior
Lyndsey Hartleben and sophomore
Hillary Johnson. Hartleben's nine shots were a team-high, while Johnson contributed seven. Hartleben and junior
Rachel Vitense each had three shots on goal as well.
Goalkeepers
Kara Gamboni and
Hannah Turgerson each recorded three saves. The only goal that CU allowed was a rebound off of a penalty kick. Gamboni made a diving save to her right to stop NSU's Suanne Lampert's penalty kick, but the ball deflected right back to Lampert, who slid the ball past Gamboni before the defense could recover on the play.
The game was not as physical as the fouls suggest, with Northern State being whistled for 18 to Concordia's 11, but NSU's Melissa Gamble drew a pair of yellow cards and was ejected in the 116th minute. She drew both cards for sliding aggressively into the CU keepers, the second time forcing Torgerson to leave the game due to injury.
Concordia hits the road on Friday, Sept. 30 when they take on Winona State at 7 p.m.
