The Concordia softball team (39-13) went 2-0 in the first day of the NSIC Softball Tournament. They opened the tournament with an 8-0 win over Bemidji State in five innings and followed that up with a 5-0 win over MSU Moorhead.
The Bears scored three runs in the third inning on five hits to open scoring. Tracie Enzler led off the inning with a double,and Jennifer Pozzani tripled down the left-field line to score Enzler. After an infield single to the shortstop by Shannon Miller, Elizabeth Plante singled to shallow center field to score Pozzani. Miller later scored on a single by Kelly Schweitz.
In the fourth inning, Concordia scored five more runs on five singles and three walks. For the game, Miller went 3-3 with a run and a RBI. Pozzani went 2-4 with a run and a RBI.
The Bears combined for 11 hits, while Allison Paitich pitched four scoreless innings, giving up two hits and striking out three. Manda Turba pitched a solid fifth inning, striking out two.
Kristen Schmidt threw a three-hit shutout in the second game as the Bears scored five runs on ten hits. Concordia scored two in the third on three straight singles. After a pair of singles by Enzler and Pozzani, Miller hit a ball to that was misplayed by the right fielder, allowing both runners to score.
In the fifth inning, Nikki Smith led off with a walk and advanced to second on a single by Kristin Linell. Both runners moved up on a wild pitch, and Smith scored on a single by Enzler.
In the sixth inning, Vanessa Dufresne pinch-hit for Kelly Schweitz and got a leadoff single. Smith then hit a single that was misplayed by the center fielder that allowed Dufresne to score, while Smith ended on third on the play. Enzler then put down a bunt single that scored Smith.
For the game, Schmidt struck out six and earned her 22nd win of the season. The Bears will play Winona State tomorrow at 12:00 in the third round of the NSIC Tournament.
