For the second straight year, the Concordia softball team won the NSIC Tournament. They defeated top-seeded Winona State twice, 6-5 and 4-0, to win the title.
In the first game against Winona State, the Bears rallied from a 3-0 deficit with a run in the fifth inning and four runs in the sixth inning. The Concordia bats woke up in the fifth inning with a leadoff homerun by Amanda Yurek. Kristen Schmidt followed that with a walk, and Nikki Smith hit the Bears' second homerun of the inning over the left field fence. Kristin Linell the hit a triple that just missed clearing the right-field fence. She later scored on a sacrifice fly by Tracie Enzler.
In the top of the seventh inning, Shannon Miller doubled to center field ,and Vanessa Dufresne came in to pinch run for miller. Elizabeth Plante singled down the left field line to score Dufresne.
For the game, Concordia scored six runs on 11 hits, including six extra-base hits. Schmidt earned her school-record 23rd win, giving up five runs on seven hits and six strikeouts. She allowed only two earned runs.
In the second game, Schmidt pitched a three-hit shutout, retiring 15 straight Winona State batters in the middle five innings. She also struck out five to win her 24th game.
Linell did the major damage for the Bears with a three-run home run in the second inning, scoring Kelly Schweitz and Nikki Smith. Schweitz also scored in the fifth inning on a double by Smith.
Kristin Schmidt, Tracie Enzler, Kristen Linell, Amanda Yurek, and Shannon Miller were named to the NSIC All-Tournament Team.
The Bears are now 41-13 on the season and earn the NSIC automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. The time and place will be determined on Sunday, May 8 by the NCAA.
