Dee Wolfe hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the third inning off
Kristen Schmidt to give Bloomsburg University (45-8) a 3-0 win over Concordia University (44-14) in the first round of the NCAA Division II Elite Eight in Salem, Virginia. The Bears fall to the play-back bracket of the tournament and will play the loser of the San Francisco State/Lynn University game.
Concordia was held to just four hits on the day, with two coming in the first inning. The Bears loaded the bases with one out on a leadoff single by
Jennifer Pozzani, a walk by
Elizabeth Plante, and a single by
Amanda Yurek, yet they were unable to convert after a pair of strikeouts by Schmidt and
Kelly Schwietz.
In the fourth inning, Schmidt reached first on a bunt single with one out and advanced to second on an error on Bloomsburg that put Schwietz on first. With runners on first and second and one out,
Nikki Smith popped up to the third baseman, and
Kristin Linell struck out.
For the game, Concordia left eight runners on base. Schmidt gave up three runs on five hits had had five strikeouts in the game. She falls to 27-7 on the season.
