The Bears left the bases loaded in the bottom of the seventh inning as Concordia (44-15) was eliminated from the NCAA Division II Elite Eight by San Francisco State (42-20) 3-2 in Salem, Virginia.
San Francisco State opened up a two-run lead with a run in the second and one in the third, but Concordia cut the lead to 2-1 in the sixth inning with a leadoff single by
Elizabeth Plante and a double to center field by
Amanda Yurek to score Plante.
Vanessa Dufresne pinch ran for Yurek but was left stranded at second base following a ground out by
Kristen Schmidt to the third baseman, a fly out to right field by
Kelly Schwietz, and a ground out to third by
Nikki Smith.
Allison Paitich replaced Schmidt at pitcher to start the seventh inning, and the Gators went up 3-1 on a double to left field by Vanessa Rodriguez to score Amanda Meyer.
The Bears loaded the bases in the seventh with one out, but Plante hit a shallow pop fly to center for the second out. Concordia cut the lead to 3-2 on a walk by Yurek, but Schmidt lined out to the left fielder to end the game and the Bears' season.
Concordia left nine runners on base. They end the year with a school-record 44 wins (44-15). Schmidt took the loss and finished her season with a school-record 27 wins. Schmidt gave up two runs on four hits and four strikeouts, while Paitich gave up one run on two hits.
