Concordia-St. Paul (12-11) fell just 90 feet short of completing a four-game sweep of Division I South Dakota State (18-17), winning game one 1-0 before falling 4-2 in eight innings in game two.
Junior pitcher Kristen Schmidt earned her second shutout in as many days to lead the Golden Bears, striking out 10 while allowing five hits without issuing a walk. It was the second straight time Schmidt defeated the Jackrabbits by a score of 1-0.
The game remained a scoreless tie going into the bottom of the sixth inning, when sophomore Amanda Yurek drilled a line-drive single to right field with one out. Junior Vanessa Dufresne pinch ran for Yurek and stole second immediately, her fifth steal of the season. With two down, junior Nikki Smith ripped a double to center field, scoring Dufresne to give the Bears a 1-0 lead. In the top of the seventh, Schmidt allowed a leadoff single. The runner moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and advanced to third on a groundout to put SDSU 90 feet away from tying the game. But Schmidt struck out Chris Pesqueira to end the ballgame.
Schmidt improved to 9-4 with the win as she struck out 10 in seven innings of work, allowing five hits without issuing a walk.
In game two, sophomore pitcher Mandy Turba hurled five scoreless innings before surrendering an unearned run in the sixth. She then allowed another run in the seventh, and Concordia trailed 2-0 with just three outs remaining.
Schmidt and junior Kelly Schwietz led off the bottom of the seventh with a pair of singles to give the Bears runners on first and second with nobody out, when junior catcher Kristin Linell lined a triple over the right fielder's head, scoring both runners to tie the score at 2. But Concordia was unable to bring Linell in from third to win the game.
In the top of the eighth, South Dakota State rallied for a pair to reclaim a two-run lead to sink the Bears. Senior Allison Paitich took the loss for the Bears as she falls to 3-7 on the season. Turba went 6.1 innings, allowing two runs, one earned on six hits, with one walk and a pair of strikeouts in a no decision.
The Bears return to the diamond tomorrow afternoon when they travel to Mankato to take on Minnesota State at 3:30 p.m.
