Game Recap: Baseball |

Bears split again with Peacocks

For the second straight day, Concordia-St. Paul (16-5) could not out-slug Upper Iowa (9-17) in game one of their doubleheader, but once again, the Bears dominated game two to earn a split over the Peacocks, falling 13-11 in game one before taking game two 6-1.

Adam Flaherty improved his record to 2-3 on the season, as he pitched a gem in game two for Concordia. Flaherty tossed a complete game, allowing one earned run on six hits while striking out six and allowing just two walks. Left fielder Andy Hanson smacked a pair of home runs and drove in three runs, while shortstop Jon Schemmel went 3-4 with a run, a RBI, and a stolen base to lead the Bears.

Game one was another wild one at Robert E. Barnes Field, as the Peacocks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Concordia responded with a run in the bottom of the inning to cut the lead in half, with first baseman Erik Quarberg's RBI single, knocking in center fielder Chris Duda, who doubled down the left-field line the previous at bat.

After three innings, Concordia took a commanding 5-2 lead, with two-run homers by James Kramer and Mason Reinhart in the second and third innings as pitcher Geoff Bray cruised, striking out two batters in each of the two innings without allowing a baserunner.

But the Peacocks responded with a six-run fourth inning to reclaim the lead, 8-5, knocking Bray out of the ballgame. Rob Maslowski came on in relief and got out of the jam in the fourth.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Concordia offense loaded the bases without putting the ball in play with one out, as Duda was hit by a pitch and Quarberg and catcher Bobby Meier walked. Third baseman Mason Reinhart stepped up and drilled a shot to third base, driving in a run, and Hanson followed with a two-run single to left to tie the score at eight.

The Peacocks scored three unearned runs in the top of the fifth to jump back on top 11-8, but Concordia rallied for a run in the bottom of the fifth and two more in the bottom of the sixth to tie the score once again heading into the final inning.

In the top of the seventh, Upper Iowa rallied for two more unearned runs to give the Peacocks a 13-11 lead. The Peacocks shut down the Bears in the bottom of the seventh for the first time all game for their first 1-2-3 inning. The Bears scored in each of the first six innings but were unable to rally for the win.

Maslowski took the loss for Concordia, dropping his record to 1-1. He pitched 3.1 innings out of relief, allowing five runs - all unearned - on five hits with three strikeouts.

Concordia returns to action on Tuesday, April 13 as they head on the road to take on St. Johns at 3 p.m.
