Concordia-St. Paul (16-6, 5-2 NSIC) rallied to take an early 5-1 lead but couldn't hold off Winona State's (14-16, 7-6 NSIC) bats, as they hit four home runs to earn a 9-6 comeback victory over the Golden Bears Saturday afternoon in Winona, Minn. Game two of the doubleheader has been postponed and will be made up at a later date.
The Bears got on the scoreboard first as the first four batters in the lineup reached safely. Erik Quarberg and Bobby Meier each had run-scoring singles to center, driving in Jon Schemmel and Chris Duda to give CU a 2-0 lead.
But the Warriors answered in the bottom of the first on Brett Schmit's leadoff home run to right field, cutting the lead to one.
Andy Hanson was hit by a pitch to leadoff the top of the second for Concordia. Mason Reinhart followed with a two-run homer to right field, his third of the season. Robert Dunlop walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch, moved to third on Galen Wetzell's groundout before scoring on a Schemmel RBI groundout to shortstop, giving the Bears a three-run inning and a 5-1 lead.
Reggie Stevens put the Warriors back within three in the bottom of the inning as he drilled a solo homer to right.
Winona State took their first lead of the game in the third inning as Joe Korneta hit a grand slam, putting WSU up 6-5. It was Korneta's first of two home runs, giving him a total of 11 on the year.
The Bears struggled to score the rest of the way, as they left seven runners on base, three of them on third and one on second.
Quarberg, Meier, Tony Boxwell, and Wetzell each recorded two hits for Concordia.
Jacob Campion took the loss, dropping his record to 1-1 on the year. He worked 3.1 innings, striking out two.
No official makeup date has been scheduled for game two fo the doubleheader.
Concordia tries to rebound from their loss Sunday at noon against the Warriors for a NSIC doubleheader.
