Concordia senior guard
Ashley Smith sank a jumper at the 16:13 mark in the second half to pull the Golden Bears within 10 points of the Division I Iowa State Cyclones just minutes after the Bears fell behind by 20 points. It was the closest Concordia would come for the rest of the game, as Iowa State buried four straight field goals to pull the game out of reach as ISU defeated Concordia 87-59 on Sunday afternoon in front of 8,842 fans at Hilton Coliseum in Ames, Iowa.
Senior guard
Nakia Carlisle led Concordia with 13 points, while Smith, the only other Golden Bear in double-figures, added 12. Smith also pulled down a team-high seven rebounds and shot 5-12 while draining a pair of threes. Carlisle shot a team-best 50 percent from the field (6-12) and converted 1-3 from behind the arc while dishing out four assists and collecting three rebounds in 21 minutes of action before fouling out.
Foul trouble hurt both teams in the first half, as the teams were whistled for a combined 25 fouls. However, Iowa State didn't have a single player foul out in the contest, while Concordia had a pair forced to exit early. Aside from Carlisle, sophomore transfer
Amanda Behnke fouled out in only 15 minutes, but not before scoring eight points and grabbing five rebounds with one block. She shot 2-2 from the field and 4-5 at the free throw line.
Sophomore point guard
Katie Laviolette excelled at the point, dishing out a team-high seven assists while scoring seven points. She did not have a turnover, buried a pair of threes, and had two rebounds in a team-high 30 minutes on the court.
Concordia was outshot 51.6% to 32.4% and outrebounded 52-38 by the Cyclones. The Bears also hoisted up 32 three-point field goals, converting on eight, while Iowa State also made eight threes, but in 21 attempts. The Golden Bears were outscored at the free-throw line 15-5 and only reached the stripe 11 times in the contest.
Lyndsey Medders led the Cyclones with a double-double, scoring 17 points and dishing 10 assists. Two other Cyclones, Megan Ronhovde and Rachel Pierson, scored 17 points as well. Pierson collected eight rebounds and Ronhovde added six. Brittany Wilkins added a double-double off the bench with 12 points and 10 rebounds.
