Senior guard Nakia Carlisle scored a career-high 32 points to lead Concordia University (2-2) past Northwest Missouri State (4-1) 88-86 in overtime on Saturday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center in St. Paul, Minn.
The Bears, who led by a 62-43 margin with just over 15 minutes remaining in the second half, saw that lead disappear as the Bearcats went on a 25-4 run that spanned over nine minutes of play. The Bearcats clawed their way to a 70-68 lead with 6:12 remaining, but Concordia went on a late 7-1 run to take a 75-71 lead with 2:41 to play. NW Missouri State hit a layup with just under 2:00 and a pair of free throws with :59 to tie thee score and send it into overtime.
In overtime, the Bearcats jumped on the lead early, as they connected on a pair of threes to grab a 81-76 lead. But Concordia didn't surrender, as they fought back to take their first overtime lead, an 86-84 edge, with just over a minute remaining. Nwmsu hit a pair of free throws to knot the score at 86 with 44 seconds left, but CU's Janine Kuklis drilled a pair of free throws of her own to reclaim the lead for the bears with :18 left. Although the Bearcats had two shots to tie the score, one fell short, and the second was blocked by Amanda Behnke.
Carlise, whose 32 points paced the Bears, shot 12-21 from the field, 2-2 from three-point range, and 6-8 at the line while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing four assists in 40 minutes of action.
Behnke, a sophomore, recorded her second double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds despite playing in just 26 minutes due to foul trouble. Behnke also had three steals and two blocks while shooting 4-5 from the field and 5-8 at the line.
Senior guard Ashley Smith scored 17 points and just missed a double-double with nine rebounds and four assists. Sophomore point guard Katie Laviolette had six points, eight rebounds, and a game-high six assists in 40 minutes of work. Kuklis, a junior, added nine points and seven rebounds.
