Senior Val Olson smashed 15 kills and hit .536 to lead #7 Concordia University (16-4, 7-0) in a 30-18, 30-14, 30-17 sweep over Winona State (11-11, 2-6 NSIC) Friday evening at the Gangelhoff Center on the eve of Concordia's homecoming.
Five Golden Bears hit at least .500 for the match, as CU hit a scorching .465 as a team, their best performance of the 2005 season. Senior setter Cailin Terhaar's setting was on point, as she totaled 46 assists in the match. Junior Ashley Olson's .586 pct. paced the Bears, drilling eight kills in 12 attacks with one error. Juniors Kelsey Kyro and Jessica Lucia and freshman Maria Steinhagen all hit .500.
Lucia and Kyro were the other two Bears to reach double-digit kills with 11 and 10, respectively. Junior Megan Graham's digging performance helped Concordia shut down the Warriors to a .067 hitting pct. for the match. Graham notched 17 digs and was the only player for either team to reach double-digits.
Concordia was most impressive in game two, when they hit .629 with 18 kills in 29 attacks without an error - all while holding the Warriors to a -.100 pct. The Warriors had nine attack errors with only six kills in the second game.
The Bears were dominant at the net throughout, thwarting countless attack opportunities for the Warriors, who were unable to regroup after digging most of them, as CU outblocked WSU 10-1 on the evening.
The Golden Bears return to the floor on Tuesday, Oct. 11 when they travel to Mankato, Minn. to take on Minnesota State at 7 p.m.
