The Concordia defense tallied five interceptions and five sacks as they held Wayne State to just 121 yards of total offense on 55 plays in a 46-20 blowout victory on Saturday afternoon at Griffin Stadium in St. Paul, Minn. Safety
Chuck Miesbauer had a pair of interceptions, while defensive tackle
Brandon Sullivan had a pair of sacks to lead the CU defense.
The offense wasn't bad either, as they racked up 577 yards of total offense on 74 plays. They scored 39 unanswered points after falling behind 20-7 in the first quarter. The Bears improve to 6-0 when they rush for at least 200 yards, as they compiled 337 yards on the ground on 44 rushing attempts with four team rushing TDs. The Bears set a new school record for rushing yards in a season with 2266, breaking the old record of 2150 set in 1970.
Senior quarterback
James McNear amassed 383 yards of total offense, passing for 238 yards and a pair of TDs while carrying the ball 15 times for 145 yards with another score.
Senior running back
Brian Holmes rushed for 149 yards on 21 attempts and a pair of TDs while adding a third TD on a 39-yard reception in his first start of the season.
Senior wide receiver
Montez Bridgeforth led the receiving core with four receptions for 97 yards, while junior
Jason Simmons added three catches for 47 yards. Junior fullback
John Robinson picked up his first receiving touchdown of the season when he broke open a 26-yard screen pass that was spurred by
Ya'tarrie Brown pancake blocks downfield.
Junior linebacker
Brad Scherer paced the defense with nine tackles, eight solo, while senior linebackers
Doug Cox and
Travis Johansen each contributed seven. Cox also added a pair of tackles for loss, while Johansen recorded one. B. Sullivan added six tackles to go with his two sacks.
Three Golden Bears,
Christian Even,
Antonio Brown, and
Mark Sullivan, had one interception each in the contest to compliment Miesbauer's two. Brown's INT was his fourth of the season, while Miesbauer now has three and M. Sullivan has a pair. Even's pick was the first of his career.
Aside from B. Sullivan's two sacks,
Vince Almeda,
Travis Mellor,
Eric Power, and
Nate Holloman all added one each. Mellor also recorded a blocked field goal in the first quarter.
The defense held the Wildcats to just 31 yards rushing on 32 attempts and held their passing attack to just 90 yards as three WSC quarterbacks combined to complete 8-23 passes with the five INTs.
The win for Concordia puts them at 4-1 in NSIC play. In other action around the league, Northern State fell on the road at Bemidji State, which gives the Bears sole possession of second place, a game behind NSIC-leading Winona State, who moved to 5-0 following a win over MSU Moorhead.
The Bears continue their quest for a NSIC championship next Saturday when they travel to Marshall, minn. to take on the mustangs of Southwest Minnesota State University.
