Concordia made their first ten shots from the field to start the game and continued their hot shooting throughout the game in defeating visiting Wayne State 96-88. Senior Justin Vandenberg scored a game-high 27 points and recorded his 1000th career point midway through the second half. Vandenberg was 10-13 from the field, including 4-4 from three-point range, and he also added six rebounds and three steals.
The hot start by the Bears came on the strength of 10 consecutive baskets to start the game, including 5 of 5 from Vandenberg and 3 of 3 Kyle Marxhusen. The first miss for Concordia didn't come until the 11:49 mark of the first half. The 24-8 lead the fast start provided was quickly erased by a Wildcat 25-10 run to bring the deficit back to just one point with Concordia leading 34-33. Wayne State wouldn't get any closer as the teams battled through an offensive shootout in the 2nd half, with the Golden Bears scoring 52 second-half points en route to the 96-88 NSIC win.
Five Bears scored in double figures along with Vandenberg's 27. RJ Allen had 18 points on the night, and Kyle Marxhausen added 17 on 7 of 12 shooting. Brian Jamros chipped in with 12 points, all in the second half, and Kenneth Pointer scored 11 points off the bench.
The Bears shot 58.5% from the field and 62.5% from downtown in the game and iced the game at the free-throw line, where they shot an impressive 24 of 27 to give them a season-high 96 points in the game.
Concordia continues their NSIC schedule when they travel to MSU Moorhead on Friday, Jan. 22nd and Northern State on Saturday, Jan. 23rd, tip-off for both games is scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
