Kristen Schmidt struck out 16 and allowed only one hit in Concordia's 2-0 win over Wayne State in the opening game of the NSIC Championships. CU will play MSU Moorhead at 5:00 Friday.
With the game tied 0-0 in the sixth inning, Concordia loaded the bases on a bunt by Jennifer Pozzani, a double to left by Alicia Nortrom, and a intentional walk to Kristen Schmidt. With two outs in the inning, the Bears scored when Amanda Yurek reached on a fielders choice and Wayne State's third baseman bobbled the ball on a force out at third, scoring Pozzani. Kristin Linell followed that with a hit to centerfield, scoring Nortrom.
Schmidt had a perfect game heading into the seventh, but she gave up a lead-off walk and a hit. The runners stole second and third, but Schmidt was able to strikeout the side to preserve the win.
