Concordia-St. Paul (4-1) trailed no. 6 Minnesota State (9-0) by 20 points with 15 minutes remaining, but their comeback effort fell short as the Bears dropped their first game of the year, 75-67.
The Bears used a 24-9 run over a stretch of 7:08 that brought them within five points of stunning the sixth-ranked Mavericks.
Three Bears scored in double-figures, led by senior Justin Vandenberg with 19 points and seven rebounds. Senior Brian Jamros was hot early, scoring 11 points in the first seven minutes. MSU put the clamp down on Jamros following his early outburst, as he ended up with 16 points, including a late three-pointer that brought the Bears within six with 1:14 remaining. Jamros also led in assists with four and had a game-high four steals.
Junior Kenneth Pointer added 13 points, 11 coming in the second half. Sophomore Kyle Marxhausen chipped in seven rebounds.
Leading the way for the Mavericks was Jamel Staten with 22 points and 11 rebounds while Andy Moeller added 14 points and eight boards.
The Bears return to action this Thursday, Dec. 9 when they head toMmankato to take on Bethany Lutheran College. Tipoff is set for 7:00 p.m.
