Senior Justin Vandenberg scored 21 points in the second half on 9-11 shooting as the Golden Bears came from behind to defeat Wisconsin-River Falls 95-83 Saturday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center.
Vandenberg scored 25 for the game on 11-13 shooting and pulled down seven rebounds (4 off.) while senior Brian Jamros and junior Kenneth Pointer each added 22 in Concordia's highest scoring affair of the 2004-05 campaign.
Jamros was hot in the first half, scoring 17 points while hitting 4-5 from behind the arc and 5-8 from the field and had a team-high five assists. Pointer was strong throughout the game, scoring in double-figures in both halves and finishing the game 6-10 from the field, 2-4 from downtown and 8-9 from the stripe.
Sophomore Kyle Marxhausen led the way on the glass, grabbing a game-high eight rebounds.
Senior Dan Torrez, a former Golden Bear, returned to the Gangelhoff for the first time since leaving the program and was on fire, scoring a game-high 26 points and hitting 5-7 from beyond the arc and 10-20 from the field. Torrez had 19 in the first half as UWRF held a 46-43 halftime lead.
Both teams shot the lights out, but Concordia was able to eclipse 60 percent from the field in both halves and shot 60.4 percent for the game. The Falcons shot 59.3 percent in the first half but dropped to 48.3 percent in the second half as they let their lead slip away.
CSP and UWRF were even hotter from three-point range, with Fhe falcons hitting 11 threes (68.8 percent) and the Golden Bears connecting on nine (64.3 percent). But Concordia held a distinct advantage at the free-throw line, outscoring UWRF 22-14.
The Golden Bears return to action Monday, Dec. 20 when they travel to St. Cloud state to take on the Huskies.
