Bears fall to Winona State in final minute of double-overtime, 2-1

Concordia University took Winona State to double overtime, but fell short 2-1 as the Warriors put in the game winner with just 44 seconds remaining.

Had the Bears been able to pull out a victory, they would have moved into at tie for first place atop the Northern Sun final regular season standings. The win for Winona State, combined with a 2-1 SW Minnesota State loss to Wayne State, gives the Warriors sole possession of the regular-season NSIC crown.

The Warriors scored first in the 39th minute of play as Kallie Tellefsen took a pass from Tenny Gentile, giving WSU a 1-0 lead heading into halftime.

The bears wasted no time in answering, scoring just over four minutes into the second half to knot the score up at 1 apiece. Senior Angie Rockney scored her eighth goal of the season, assisted by freshman Hillary Johnson.

Both teams had plenty of scoring opportunities in the final 40 minutes of action, but neither squad could capitalize, forcing overtime.

The Warriors and Bears were still deadlocked after the first overtime, with WSU misfiring on multiple scoring chances with the wind at their backs.

The second overtime was the same story. This time, Concordia could not take advantage of the wind. But in the 119th minute of action, Amy Budish put the game-winning shot just under the crossbar, just out of reach for freshman goalkeeper Krysta Briese, who was making her first career start in the net.

Briese faced nine fierce Warrior shots, stopping nine in her net debut. Rockney fired five shots on goal, scoring one. But the Warriors were on the attack all day, out-shooting the bears 28-10 with a 13-8 advantage in shots on goal.

The bears finished the regular season with a school-record four NSIC wins and a 4-3 conference record, 10-10 overall. The bears' fourth place finish gives them the right to host their first-ever game in the NSIC tournament.

Concordia will take on Bemidji State on Tuesday, Nov. 2 at 1:00 p.m. at Concordia Field in the opening round.
