Josh Deer was promoted to Associate Athletic Director the spring of 2023 and has been full-time at Concordia since 2006, starting as Assistant Sports Information Director, earning promotions to Sports Information Director (2008), and Assistant Athletic Director for Communications (2011). In all, Deer has been at Concordia since the fall of 2001 as an undergraduate student, and involved in the athletics department since the 2003-04 academic year as a sports information intern.
His duties at Concordia include updating the official website of Golden Bear athletics, producing department publications, press releases, archiving records, statistics, photography, PA announcing, select play-by-play for athletics webcasts and staffing the press table at home events.
Additionally, he has chaired multiple hiring committees for coaching and support staff positions within the athletic department.
At the conference level, Deer served a two year stint as chair of NSIC sports information directors (2017-19) and served on the NSIC strategic planning committee in 2013-14.
He earned the 2007-08 AVCA Grant Burger Media Relations award for Division II's Central Region for his work in promoting Concordia's first NCAA championship. It was the first of three times the SID office would earn the honor as two years later Melissa Wolf, then the assistant SID, was selected for the award and in 2017-18 the sports information office as a whole was honored by the AVCA.
Deer is an active member of College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) and serves as the regional coordinator and Division II vice chair for the D2CCA (formerly Daktronics) Baseball All-America program, is a voting member of the National Collegiate Baseball Writer's Association (NCBWA) at the regional and national level and has been a voting member of the D2 Baseball News' Tino Martinez, Josh Willingham and Brett Tomko Awards and also serves as a member of the Associated Press Division II Football All-America committee.
A 2004 graduate of Concordia University, St. Paul, Deer spent parts of two years as an undergraduate intern in the sports information office before serving as a graduate assistant in the department for two more years.
He received his bachelor's degree in December of 2004 in communication studies (sports information emphasis) with a minor in history. He completed a master's in organizational management from Concordia in 2009.
In addition to his work at Concordia, he also turned an internship with the Northern Sun Intercollegiate Conference (NSIC) into a pair of part-time positions with the league office as interim media relations director during undergraduate and graduate school.
His experience at the NCAA Division II level includes working or serving as host of several NCAA regional and NSIC tournaments while being the host SID for two straight NCAA Division II Championship events (2008 & 2009 Volleyball).
Aside from Concordia, he has worked numerous events at the professional, NCAA Division I and III and high school levels.
At the pro sports level, Deer served as a volunteer assistant for the Minnesota Vikings media relations gameday staff (2004-06) and was a longtime spotter for CBS Sports for all Vikings games aired on CBS.
He has also worked multiple NCAA Division I basketball tournaments hosted by the University of Minnesota and has worked for the Minnesota State High School League (MSHSL) in virtually every sport's state tournaments (2004-present) in various capacities (official statistics, media relations, etc.).
He currently holds membership in the IATSE Local 745 as a freelancer for Bally Sports, Big Ten Network and other regional/national live televised sporting events.
The Apple Valley, Minnesota native is a graduate of Eastview High School and currently resides in New Brighton with his wife, Stephanie and their two sons, Logan and Owen.
