Steve Butler joined the CU baseball staff for the 2009 season as he continued his professional playing career. As a Golden Bear coach, Butler specializes in hitting and defense.

Butler played six years of professional baseball, completing the 2009 and 2010 seasons with the St. Paul Saints of the American Association in his top seasons as a pro.

In his six pro seasons, Butler played in nearly 350 games with close to 1,000 career at bats and 244 career hits.

In 2012, Butler had two tours with USA Baseball at the NTIS national team identification series. He added two more tours in 2013 while assisting both NTIS Tournaments in Cary, N.C. and another in 2015 with the 14U USA Baseball National Team as part of the developmental program staff.

He received two rings for gold medals in the summer of 2013 for his work with USA Baseball evaluating players for the 15U Pan American Championship team and 18U World Championship team.

He began his professional career with the St. Paul Saints, playing two years for the hometown team. In his third year, he went south and won a South Coast League Championship with the South Georgia Peanuts. In his fourth season in 2008, Butler split time with two teams in the American Association, starting with the Fort Worth Cats before finishing up back in St. Paul with the Saints.

As a player with the Golden Bears, Butler was utilized at many positions as one of the more versatile players with the club. He also played eight different positions around the diamond as a professional. He uses his extensive knowledge to teach positions all over the field, while also working with players on their hitting and defense while emphasizing work with infielders.

A native of Apple Valley, Minn., Butler was a three year starter for CU and played on the school’s first NSIC Championship team in 2003. The 2004 graduate played in 102 games, starting 101 while producing a .313 career average and belting seven career home runs. His senior season culminated with a career-high 37 RBI and 37 hits while his freshman season had a career-best .330 average. The third baseman had 103 career hits and knocked in 75 career runs.

Butler earned a degree in Kinesiology with an emphasis in Sport Management and a Coaching Certificate. Steve and his wife, Jessica have a daughter, Blake.
