Johnson, Eckmann power CSP's split with UMD

Eckmann hits key first game homer, Johnson homers in each game

ST. PAUL, Minn. - Concordia-St. Paul (13-21, 8-14 NSIC) secured a midweek split with Minnesota Duluth (10-24, 8-14 NSIC), picking up a 10-6 first game victory before falling 14-4 in seven innings in game two on Thursday afternoon at Barnes Field.

Concordia will now hit the road for a three-game weekend series at Minot State with a doubleheader on Saturday before the series finale on Sunday.

Junior outfielder Kaden Johnson went 5-8 with five runs, five RBIs, a walk, stolen base, double and two home runs in the doubleheader and junior first baseman Charlie Harms went 2-5 with a run, two RBIs and three walks while reaching base safely in each game to keep his streak of reaching base safely (H, BB, HBP) in all 34 games this season intact.

GAME 1: CSP 10, UMD 6
Kaden Johnson set the tone as Concordia had the distinction of being the "guest" on the scoreboard on its its home field due to a site reversal as the games were initially scheduled to be played in Duluth. Johnson homered on the third pitch of the game, sending a shot to left centerfield that struck the roof of Gangelhoff Center about a third of the way up on the building.

The Bulldogs added two runs in the bottom of the inning, but Concordia pounced in the second with four runs to take a 5-2 lead.

Johnson drove in the tying run with a bases loaded walk and Charlie Harms followed with a two-run single, moving Johnson from first to third on the play. Gus Berger added a sacrifice fly for the Golden Bears, who never gave up the lead the rest of the way.

After giving up a pair in the first, freshman Evan Newlander settled in and navigated his way through four innings to secure his first career win.

Newlander struck out five and walked two while allowing six hits. UMD put up six runs (five earned).

Blake Eckmann gave Newlander support in the fourth. After leadoff back-to-back walks to Harms and Berger in the fourth, Eckmann came up with two outs and deposited a 2-2 pitch onto the Carlander Field infield for an 8-3 lead.

Although UMD matched the three runs in the bottom of the fourth, Concordia padded the lead back with two more in the fifth as Chase McQuade led off with a double and scored on Johnson's RBI single. Johnson would steal second, advance to third on a throwing error on the steal attempt and came home on a delayed double steal attempt, scoring before Harms was tagged out on the play for a 10-6 lead.

Caden Carsen came out of the bullpen and took care of it the rest of the way, striking out three across three one-hit shutout innings for his second save.

Johnson went 2-4 with a walk, three runs, three RBIs, his seventh home run and 13th stolen base in the game. Harms, who hits behind Johnson, went 1-1 with three walks, a run and two RBIs. Eckmann was 1-3 with two runs and the three-run homer, his first of the year.

UMD was led by Garrett Stauffacher going 2-4 with a run, RBI and stolen base. Liam Kruse took the loss in his second start of the year, moving to 0-1. He allowed five runs in two innings.

GAME 2: UMD 14, CSP 4 (7)
In game two, UMD struck first and never looked back, scoring four in the first and two in the second for a quick 6-0 lead. Concordia would score four of the next five runs, trailing 7-4 heading into the bottom of the fourth.

Concordia broke through in the third inning as Kaden Johnson and Charlie Harms started the inning with back-to-back hits. Gus Berger was robbed of a sharp single up the middle, grounding into a fielder's choice to put runners on the corners. Eric Berg followed with an RBI double, his 11th double of the year and Max Kaplan followed with a sacrifice fly into the left field corner in foul territory.

In the fourth, Eli Nelson started the rally with a double over the center fielder's head and scored on Johnson's second homer of the day, his eighth of the year.

But the Bulldogs continued to put up runs throughout the game, scoring in all but the sixth inning. UMD tacked on three more in the bottom of the fourth after CSP's two in the top of the inning, expanding the lead to 10-4.

A UMD run in the fifth and a scoreless sixth set up the Bulldogs to end the seventh with a 10-run walkoff.

Johnson went 3-4 with two runs, two RBIs, his eighth double and eighth homer. Harms went 1-4 to keep his on-base streak active with a single in the third inning. Nelson's double was his fourth of the year as each catcher had a double on the day after McQuade's fourth in the first game.

Daniel Musgjerd picked up the start and took the loss, falling to 0-2.

Caden Klebba earned his first win of the year (1-2), pitching a complete game (7.0), allowing four runs on eight hits and a walk with four strikeouts.

UMD's top four hitters in the lineup each had two hits and seven Bulldogs had a pair of hits overall.Michael Reem was one of the two Bulldogs with just one hit, but he had a three-run homer and the Bulldogs had seven extra-base hits in game two.
