BISMARCK, N.D. - Concordia-St. Paul (20-26, 15-19 NSIC) wasn't able to secure a road win on Saturday, falling 6-0 and 4-3 at UMary (29-15, 22-9 NSIC) on a chilly, windy day.
The two teams will complete their three game series with a 9-inning game on Sunday at noon.
Concordia's bullpen provided a strong afternoon as
Jack Thompson (game 1) and
Liam Bystol (game 2) combined to work 6.1 innings, allowing just one run on four hits and a walk with three strikeouts.
GAME 1: UMary 6, CSP 0
Concordia was able to pick up a two-out single in the first inning off the bat of freshman
Gus Berger who pulled a single to right.
But the Marauders set the tone from the gate, working around the two-out hit by Concordia and starting off the bottom of the inning with a leadoff homer, adding two more runs (one unearned) for an early 3-0 lead.
Concordia went down in order in the next two innings as UMary extended the lead to 5-0 with two more in the second inning off of another leadoff homer and a two-out solo homer.
In the fourth, Concordia threatened as
Charlie Harms drew a leadoff walk and
Hawken Hedlund added a two-out single to left to give CSP a runner in scoring position for the first time, but the rally came up empty.
That would be CSP's last threat as Lucas Bergum retired the final 10 batters he faced for the shutout win. Bergum (4-3) allowed two singles and a walk while striking out nine.
For Concordia,
Ollie Yuhas took the loss, allowing five runs (four earned) on four hits and three walks in 1.2 innings, evening his record at 4-4.
Jack Thompson answered the call in a strong relief effort, working 4.1 innings and allowing a run on four hits and a walk with two strikeouts.
GAME 2: UMary 4, CSP 3
The Golden Bears capitalized on three first-inning errors by the Marauders in game two with
Will Husemann getting the go-ahead RBI single to center with two outs, scoring
Charlie Harms.
Tyus Smith put up a scoreless first on the mound, inducing a double play to end the inning after a one-out single.
Concordia put more traffic on the bases in the second with
Nolan Swenson drawing a four-pitch leadoff walk, moving up on
Eli Nelson's sacrifice.
Jack Setterlund followed with a seven-pitch walk, but the Golden Bears weren't able to add to the early lead.
In the bottom of the second, Mary picked up back-to-back singles to start the inning with a sacrifice fly tying the game, and after a fielder's choice, got a two-out double and a two-run single to go-ahead 3-1.
Concordia got one-out hits in the third and fourth, stranding an
Eric Berg double in the third while a double play erased
Eli Nelson's single in the fourth.
UMary scored an unearned run on a bases-loaded hit by pitch with two outs in the fourth to extend the lead to 4-1.
Concordia continued to put pressure on UMary as
Kaden Johnson and Harms opened the fifth with back-to-back singles, moving to second and third on
Gus Berger's grounder to the right side.
Eric Berg added an RBI ground out to cut the lead to 4-2.
In the sixth, CSP opened with a
Hawken Hedlund leadoff single, but CSP left Nelson on second base in scoring position.
Smith's start ended after six innings, allowing three earned runs (four total) on nine hits and two walks. He would take the loss, falling to 2-3 in an efficient outing with 88 pitches.
Liam Bystol replaced him in the seventh, getting three-straight flyouts in a 1-2-3 seventh.
After going down in order on strikes in the top of their own seventh against Brody Wrench of the Marauder bullpen, Concordia looked to rally in the eighth trailing 4-2.
Eric Berg led off with a single and stole second to get things started, but two more strikeouts by Mary's second reliever
Jack Thompson threatened to leave CSP scoreless in another scoring threat. Instead,
Nolan Swenson picked his spot to make an impact, lacing a 1-2 pitch to right center for an RBI double, putting the tying run in scoring position with two outs in the eighth - although he would be stranded on a line out.
Bystol had another strong inning in the eighth for CSP, getting a strikeout and two fly outs to strand a one-out HBP.
In CSP's final chance in the ninth against Ryan Chamberlain, who relieved Thompson after the Swenson RBI double,
Jack Setterlund opened the inning with a single, but Chamberlain retired the next three batters including two on strikes to pick up the four-out save, his third of the year.
Aiden Johnson secured the win for Mary, improving to 4-3 with six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on six hits and two walks.
Bystol worked 2.0 shutout for CSP's bullpen, retiring six of the seven batters he faced on 24 pitches with only the HBP against him.
Berg led CSP's lineup by going 2-4 with a double, run and RBI while Swenson was 1-3 with a double and an RBI.
