Hedlund's slam, Smith's shutout spark doubleheader sweep at Minot State

Concordia wins first two games of the series in drastically different ways

MINOT, N.D. - Concordia-St. Paul (15-21, 10-14 NSIC) secured a road sweep on Saturday afternoon, defeating Minot State (13-21, 8-16 NSIC) 12-5 and 2-0 on a sunny, windy day at Corbett Field.

The two teams will complete the three-game series on Sunday with a noon first pitch at Corbett Field.

Shortstop Hawken Hedlund put the exclamation point on a 9-run fifth inning in game with a two-out grand slam for his first career home run.

In game two, it was sophomore right-hander Tyus Smith on the mound who paced the squad. Smith hurled the program's first 9-inning shutout since Louie Varland's game two gem on March 27, 2018 against Bemidji State at Veterans Field in Minnetonka.

It was also Concordia's second shutout in the last two weeks, as CSP blanked Winona State 4-0 in game two at Barnes Field on March 31 in a combined effort.

Game one starter Ollie Yuhas also went the distance, working all seven frames in game one as Yuhas and Smith gave the bullpen some additional rest with just a single 9-inning series finale awaiting on Sunday.

Junior first baseman Charlie Harms hit safely on both ends of the doubleheader, going 1-4 with a run and a walk in the opener before going 1-3 with a walk and an RBI in the second game to extend his reached-base streak to all 36 games this season.

GAME 1: CSP 12, MINOT 5
The Golden Bears struck first in the top of the first inning with a two-out rally as Gus Berger drew a walk and scored on Eric Berg's two-out RBI double to the opposite field in right.

Berg had a big first game, going 3-4 with a double, run and three RBIs. The double ties Berger and Harms for the team lead with 12 on the year.

Berger also had a busy day, going 1-3 with a walk, two runs and an RBI.

Minot State would claim its first lead with extra-base power in the third inning, getting a leadoff double, a one-out RBI double and a two-out, two-run home run.

Concordia came alive in the fifth inning, with the first five batters reaching base in varying forms as Chase McQuade and Nick Carlson drew walks, Hawken Hedlund reached on an error, Kaden Johnson's bases-loaded fielder's choice resulted in a throwing error that scored a pair of runs and Charlie Harms had the first hit of the inning.

Two of the next three were retired, although Berger's fielder's choice bouncer to the right side scored a run and was followed by a bunt single by Berg.

With two outs, Will Husemann drew the third walk of the inning, forcing the second pitching change of the inning for Minot State. The Beavers' third pitcher of the frame was greeted with McQuade's RBI single, keeping the bases loaded for Hedlund who homered in his second at bat of the inning.

In the top of the sixth, it appeared to be another crooked inning as the first four batters reached base with a hit by Johnson, walk to Harms, a hit by Berger to load the bases for Berg who drove in a run with the third hit of the inning. After a pop-out to second in shallow right field, Husemann drove in a run with a hit by pitch for a 12-3 lead.

In the late innings, left-handed starter Ollie Yuhas allowed a pair of homers, but limited the damage to solo shots.

Yuhas went the distance on a windy day, allowing five runs on nine hits, striking out five with just one walk to improve to 3-3 on the year. It was his longest start, previously going 6.2 innings twice and he's pitched at least 5.0 innings in five of his last six starts. He's walked just one batter in three of his last four, as well.

Carlson, the freshman second baseman, surpassed 30 walks on the year with two more in four trips to the plate and has now walked 31 times in 32 games on the season.

Cowen Meyer led Minot State by going 2-4 with two home runs and three RBIs from the cleanup spot.

Tanner Groseclose allowed just one hit in his 4.0 innings in the start for Minot State, but walked five and allowed five runs (one earned) to take his first loss, falling to 0-1.

GAME 2: CSP 2, MINOT 0
In the 9-inning second game, the Golden Bears and Beavers traded zeros through five innings. Minot State threatened by putting runners in scoring position in the second, third, fourth, fifth and sixth innings. The Beavers' biggest threat against CSP sophomore righty Tyus Smith was in the third inning, getting a single and double with one out to put runners on second and third, but Smith missed the bat with a strikeout of Minot State second hitter Vinnie Gates before getting a groundout to short to end the threat.

Smith would also pickup strikeouts to end the fourth and fifth innings, and got a one-out strikeout with runners on first and second.

It was part of a six-strikeout performance, doubling his previous career-high when he struck out three in his last appearance when he worked 3.2 in relief against Sioux Falls last weekend. The 9-inning shutout was also the longest appearance for Smith, who worked 5.0 relief innings on March 10 at Rollins, with his next two longest starts being 3.2 innings.

While Smith held Minot State in check, the Golden Bears grabbed the lead for him in the sixth inning.

After Minot State starter Wyatt Toth set down the first eight batters he faced, he cruised into the sixth inning having faced one more batter than the minimum with a no-hitter intact, issuing a two-out walk to Jack Setterlund in the third while Charlie Harms reached on error to start the fourth before being erased on a double play to end the inning.

In the sixth, Eli Nelson led off with a walk and became Concordia's first runner in scoring position in the game when Setterlund moved him over with a sacrifice bunt, turning it over to the top of the lineup in a scoreless game.

Kaden Johnson and Charlie Harms followed with back-to-back RBI singles for a 2-0 lead, which would be the final outcome.

Concordia would threaten again in the eighth, with Setterlund drawing his second walk to start the inning, with Harms adding a one-out walk to put two runners on. Eric Berg was plunked on a 1-2 pitch to load the bases with two outs, but CSP wasn't able to provide additional insurance for Smith.

In the ninth, Will Husemann led off with a single and Setterlund drew his third walk of the day with two outs to give Concordia one last threat.

Setterlund came up to the plate four times, but didn't have an at bat. Playing second base and batting ninth in the first game, Carlson drew a pair of walks to push his total over 30. In the second game, Setterlund one-upped him with three walks and had a sacrifice bunt.

The two infielders are each clearing .400 OBPs on the year, with Carlson at .412 in 84 at bats and Setterlund at .462 in 38 at bats.

Minot State's lineup was led by Cowen Meyer once again, going 2-4 while Mason Boyken was 2-3 from the bottom of the order.

Smith improved to 2-2 with the shutout for CSP, scattering eight hits while striking out six and walking just one.

Toth took the loss, falling to 2-3 as he allowed two runs on three hits and four walks in 7.2 innings with seven strikeouts.
