Late push falls short as Golden Bears fall to Panthers

Hansen adds a goal to her career-best season

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (4-6, 1-1 GLIAC) saw their first GLIAC loss of the season after a comeback bid fell short 10-6 against the Panthers of Davenport (7-3, 2-0 GLIAC) on Friday afternoon at the DU Turf Field.

Leading the day for the Golden Bears was freshman Shelby Marik has now scored a goal in each game this season and holds seven multi-goal games.

It was a close game throughout the contest, and until the final minutes of the fourth quarter no team saw more than a two goal lead.

In the first quarter, Davenport saw the first score before Shelby Hansen tied it up with her 13th goal of the season. She was assisted by Susie Monson, her 10th assist of the season. The quarter ended 1-1 after both teams exchanged turnovers.

The second period saw Concordia score just under a minute in to take a 2-1 lead, led by Monson with her 22nd goal of the game. The Panthers responded 40 seconds later to tie the game for the second time at 2-2.

A save from goalkeeper Marge Lucio gave the Golden Bears a good clear opportunity to get back into the offensive zone. Freshman Alayna Roehl found the net to take a 3-2 lead, her 14th goal of the season. She was assisted by Kaysawn Carlson, her first of the season.

Davenport found their offensive spark in the first quarter, outscoring the Navy and Gold 3-1 to take a 5-4 lead into the final quarter. Scoring the lone goal for CSP was Marik with her first of the day, assisted by freshman Jayde Isaacson.

The Golden Bears capitalized on a ground ball pickup from Anna Palony to gain possession as they stormed down the field. Carlson riffled the ball to the back of the net for her fourth goal and first multi-point game of the season.

A quick response from the Panthers saw them retake the lead 6-5 with 13 minutes left to play. Davenport won the ensuing draw control to gain possession and quickly score to retake the lead 7-6.

Five offensive turnovers would end the scoring chances for the Golden Bears and see the Panthers go on a 4-0 run to seal the win 10-6.

Sophomore Ruby Swenson notched a season-high five ground balls and three caused turnovers to lead the defensive effort for Concordia.

Junior Marge Lucio saw her seventh start of the season in the net where she made nine saves, her second most of the season to bring her season total to 42.

As a team, the Navy and Gold went 19-26 on clear attempts and committed 25 turnovers. Davenport out-shot CSP 27-23 and 18-11 on goal.

The Golden Bears will return to action on Sunday to face the Lakers of Grand Valley State at the GVSU Lacrosse Stadium in Allendale, Mich. First-draw is scheduled for 11 a.m. CT.
