Golden Bears coast to nine in a row with 21 point win over Wildcats

CSP put the finishing touches on a 4-0 homestand with a win over Wayne State Saturday.

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Five Golden Bears tallied double-digits as the Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (17-6, 13-5 NSIC) cruised to nine wins in a row with a 81-60 win over the Wayne State Wildcats (10-14, 5-13 NSIC) on Saturday afternoon at the Gangelhoff Center.

A trio of Golden Bears recorded 14 points in the win, with Avery Moeller leading the charge, going 5-of-10 from the floor and 4-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc in 26 minutes off the bench. The sophomore guard pulled down five rebounds in the win and blitzed the Wildcats on defense, coming away with four steals and one block.

Junior center Emma Mommsen tallied 14 as well, shooting 7-of-12 from the field, with four rebounds, one assist and one steal. Lauren Wilson's 14 came on 5-of-10 shooting and 2-of-5 from three-point range, while grabbing five boards and dishing out five assists.

The fifth Golden Bear to tally double-figures was Leah Dengerud, scoring 11 points on 2-of-5 shooting, while going a perfect 6-of-6 at the free throw line.

In total seven found the scoresheet for CSP, with Ashley Schuelke adding seven points, with six rebounds and seven assists. Redshirt freshman Ava Thompson added eight points off the bench with two rebounds and two assists.

Three-point shooting was the Golden Bears strength once again, as they hit at a 44.4% (12-27) clip from beyond the arc. The Wildcats hit at just a 20% (4-20) clip from outside.

Emma Mommsen drove the lane and put CSP up four in the early going, with the Golden Bears hitting at a 50% clip in the opening quarter to hold a 13-12 lead.

In the second, Avery Moeller and Ashley Schuelke set the tone with back-to-back three point buckets to extend the CSP advantage to nine. Concordia was 4-of-7 (57.1%) shooting from beyond the arc in the second period, as the Golden Bears continued to build their lead, going up 15 on a Schuelke jumper, with CSP leading 47-30 at the break.

The Wildcats trimmed the CSP lead down to nine early in the third, but the Golden Bears continued to answer, scoring 20 points in the third and shooting 46.6% (7-15) from the field in the period.

Moeller knocked down a fastbreak three to open the fourth, extending the CSP lead to 20. Concordia put up 14 points in the quarter to close things out and grab a 81-60 win.

As a team the Golden Bears shot at a 47.5% (29-61) clip in the win, while limiting the Wildcats to just 39.6% (21-53) shooting. CSP won the rebounding battle grabbing 38 boards to Wayne's 28.
