QUINCY, Ill. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (2-3, 0-0 GLIAC) suffered their first road loss of the season 19-10 to the Hawks of Quincy at the QU Stadium on Friday afternoon.
Leading the offensive attack for the Golden Bears was Susie Monson, Shelby Marik and Alayna Roehl, each notching a pair of goals.
It was the Navy and Gold who got on the board first, scoring just 12 seconds into the game. Kaitlyn Rossi recorded her second goal of the season unassisted to get an early spark on the offense.
The Hawks found a quick back-to-back goal response to steal the Golden Bears thunder and take their first lead of the day.
Freshman Shelby Marik would respond right back to even the score before a trio of goals would end the first quarter in favor of Quincy 5-2.
A man-up opportunity for the Hawks would see them add one more goal to start the second quarter with Marik following close behind with her second goal of the game and 12th of the season, cutting into the QU lead 6-3.
Quincy came in twos during the game and fought back with another pair of goals to once again extend their lead 8-3. Senior Susie Monson broke into the scoring run with her first goal of the game to set the score at 8-4.
Three more goals for the Hawks would end the second quarter in their favor 11-4, putting the Golden Bears backs against the wall for an early test.
Freshman Lauren Barnacle scored her fourth goal of the season just under a minute into the third quarter, quickly followed up by freshman Alayna Roehl to give the Golden Bears some much needed offensive momentum.
QU would have none of the Navy and Gold's resurgence and went on a 4-0 run to end the third quarter up 15-6.
Roehl opened the fourth quarter with her second goal of the game and eighth of the season to see if she could ignite another spark for CSP.
Junior Shelby Hansen carried the momentum with her sixth goal of the season to once again break into the Hawks lead 15-8.
Both teams traded a pair of goals, including goals from Monson and Kaysawn Carlson to see the game at 17-10 in favor of Quincy with three minutes remaining. A final pair of goals for QU would see the Golden Bears fall 19-10.
Leading the defensive effort for the Golden Bears was senior Claire Flahaven. Flahaven notched two caused turnovers, one ground ball and won a team-leading four draw controls.
Junior goalkeeper Marge Lucio saw her third start of the season in net where she made three saves before Erika Holm came in for the second half of play. Holm made a season-high six saves and saw a team-high four ground balls.
As a team, the Hawks were in the driver's seat from the very beginning and forced the Golden Bears to commit 21 turnovers. Quincy out-shot CSP 37-21 and won 18 of the draw controls.
The Navy and Gold went 11-19 on clear attempts and were only able to get 13 shots on goal, which proved to be too hard to overcome.
The Golden Bears will now travel to St. Joseph, Mo. to face the Griffons of Missouri Western State on Sunday inside the Griffon Indoor Sports Complex. First draw is scheduled for 11 a.m.
