ST. PAUL, Minn. - The Concordia-St. Paul women's lacrosse team (2-1, 0-0 GLIAC) grounded the Flyers of Lewis 12-6 on Friday night in the Concordia Dome for their second win of the season.
The Golden Bears are now 6-0 all-time against the Flyers including a 3-0 home record.
Leading the Navy and Gold's offensive attack was freshman Shelby Marik who scored a team-leading four goals to mark her first career hat-trick. Marik is now on a three-game scoring streak, leading CSP with seven total goals this season.
Susie Monson continued her star-studded senior season, tallying her second hat-trick of the season and winning seven draw controls. After tonight's game, Monson sits one goal short of reaching the 100 goal milestone. She would become just the fourth Golden Bear in program history to reach the milestone.
In the first quarter, both teams worked to find their rhythm, trading turnovers before Marik scored her first goal of the night. She was assisted by Shelby Hansen, marking her second of the season.
Less than two minutes later senior Sydney Smith rifled one through to score her first goal of the season, unassisted. Hansen followed suit two minutes later and found the net for her third goal of the season.
The Flyers found their runway and capitalized on a CSP turnover to get their first score of the game with just under seven minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Monson would add her first goal of the game to give Concordia the 4-1 advantage heading into the second quarter.
The second quarter was all Golden Bears behind Monson back-to-back opening goals to extend the lead 6-1.
Marik notched her second goal of the game before the Flyers would respond on a free-position shot to cut into the deficit 7-2.
Freshman Brooklyn Hedberg scored her third goal of the season with Marik following in suit quickly to give Concordia a 9-2 lead going into the break.
Both teams had a quiet third quarter, each finding the net once to make it a 10-3 game in favor of CSP.
Hansen put a quick goal on the board to open the fourth quarter before Lewis put together a strong come-back bid, scoring three unanswered goals to make it a 11-6 game with seven minutes to play.
Failed clear attempts and turnovers from both teams brought the game clock to just under 30 seconds to play. Freshman Alayna Roehl added a score to give the Golden Bears the 12-6 victory over the Flyers.
Junior Erika Holm saw her first start of the season in net where she earned her sixth career win.
Leading the defense was senior Anna Palony who accumulated a team-leading five ground balls and had two caused turnovers. Her five ground balls marked a career-high after previously reaching four twice.
CSP out-shot Lewis 38-16 and forced 34 turnovers from the Flyers. Concordia saw a season-high 16 clears in the win, their most since last season's matches with Northern Michigan and Grand Valley where they recorded 19.
The Golden Bears will return to action for their final home non-conference match on Sunday, facing the Bearcats of McKendree at 12 p.m. in the Concordia Dome.
