ST. PAUL, Minn. — Despite a 27 point night from Lauren Wilson the Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball team (8-6, 4-5 NSIC) took a tough two point loss to MSU Moorhead (8-5, 5-4 NSIC) at the Gangelhoff Center Friday night, falling in overtime, 72-20.
The Golden Bears led by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, but couldn't close it out as the Dragons put together a 13-4 run to tie the game at 64 and send it to overtime. In the extra period Moorhead hit a pair of key jumpers down the stretch to take a two point lead with four seconds to play, holding on from there to escape with the win.
Lauren Wilson turned in her fifth 20+ point performance of the season, dropping 27 while going an efficient 13-of-19 from the floor, setting a new career-high for made field goals in the process. Wilson's previous single-game high was 11 against Minnesota Crookston on Jan. 27, 2024.
The junior forward also grabbed 9 rebounds, while dishing out 6 assists, On defense Wilson came up with 5 blocks and 4 steals.
Lydia Haack followed up her 44 point effort against Winona State with another strong night, recording her fourth double-double of the season with 18 points and 11 assists. Haack also grabbed 9 boards, falling one shy of the triple-double, while shooting 8-of-17 as well.
Ashley Schuelke put together a 12 point night, going 5-of-10 from the field with 4 rebounds and 4 assists. Leah Dengerud and Avery Moeller each recorded 5 points and Lauren Feddema tallied 3 points on the night.
As a team the Golden Bears were strong from the field shooting 29-of-63 (46%), to the Dragons 23-of-68 (33.8%).
CSP took a 7-3 lead in the first on a Lauren Wilson layup, Moorhead battled back taking a three point lead late in the quarter. Concordia grabbed the final four points, to go up 20-19 at the end of the period.
The Golden Bears picked up where they left off to start the second, going on an 8-1 run capped off with a Lydia Haack three to make it a 28-20 game. The Dragons narrowed the gap to three later in the quarter, with CSP regaining a seven point lead on a Lauren Feddema fastbreak layup and taking a 37-32 lead into the half.
CSP had the hot hand on the third, hitting on 64% of their shots from the field to open up a 12 point lead with two minutes to play in the period, on a Lauren Wilson bucket in the paint. Concordia closed the quarter with a 56-46 lead.
Moorhead stormed back in the fourth, tying the game at 60 near the midway point of the period thanks to a 9-0 run. Taking their first lead of the half minutes later, Leah Dengerud responded with a three point bucket to take a 64-62 lead. But it wasn't enough as Moorhead made the final shot of the quarter to tie it at 64 and send it to overtime.
In the extra period, the Golden Bears led twice, taking a 68-66 lead on a Lauren Wilson bucket in the paint. But the Dragons tied the game with a pair of free throws, taking the lead on a jumper and sealing the deal with another jumper in the paint, coming away with the win in overtime.
On the glass Moorhead had the advantage, outrebounding Concordia by a 47-40 margin. The Golden Bears once again capitalized on turnovers, forcing 15 and coming away with 15 points off turnovers to the Dragons 10. CSP had the advantage inside, with 46 points in the paint to Moorhead's 30.
The Golden Bears will look to bounce back Saturday afternoon, Jan. 10 when they take on Minnesota Crookston at the Gangelhoff Center. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
