ABERDEEN, S.D. — The Concordia-St. Paul women's basketball (11-6, 7-5 NSIC) team completed a weekend sweep with a 78-51 win over Northern State (10-8, 5-7 NSIC) in Aberdeen Saturday night. Five Golden Bears tallied double digits in the blowout win, as CSP shot over 50% as a team for the third time this season.
As a team Cocordia was 29-of-57 (50.9%) from the field, while holding the Wolves to 18-of-49 (36.7%) shooting on the night. From three-point range the Golden Bears were 7-of-18 (38.9%) shooting.
The Golden Bears offensive attack was led by the trio of Lydia Haack, Lauren Wilson and Emma Mommsen, with Haack leading the pack with 15 points. The senior guard was 7-of-11 shooting, while grabbing 6 rebounds and dishing out 4 assists.
Wilson tallied 14 points in the win, hitting on 5-of-10 attempts from the field and making 4-of-5 attempts at the free throw line. The junior forward also grabbed 5 rebounds, with 1 assist, 1 block and 1 steal.
Junior center Emma Mommsen was pivotal in the paint all night long, dropping 13 points on 4-of-6 shots from the floor, and going 5-of-6 at the charity stripe. On defense Mommsen came away with 3 blocks and 3 boards as well.
Ashley Schuelke was 4-of-6 shooting on the night, good for 11 points and 2 assists. Lauren Feddema came up big off the bench scoring 11 points on 4-of-9 shots from the field and 3-of-4 attempts from beyond the arc while grabbing 8 rebounds.
Sophomore Avery Moeller came up with 8 points off the bench, hitting on 3-of-4 attempts from the floor.
Northern held an 8-5 lead near the midway point of the opening period, a pair of layups from Wilson and Schuelke put CSP in front. From there the Golden Bears closed the quarter with a 9-3 run to take a 16-11 lead.
Concordia picked up where they left off in the second, hitting at a 50% clip from the field, outscoring the Wolves 20-16 in the period and holding a 13 point lead at the halftime break.
The Wolves answered with a quick 7-0 run to start the third to cut the deficit to six. CSP continued to answer, getting the lead back to double digits on an Ashley Schuelke three point jumper and holding a 60-46 lead at the end of three.
It was all CSP from there, opening the final quarter with a 16-3 run capped by a Lydia Haack three pointer. Avery Moeller sank a jumper to open a 29 point lead with two minutes to play as the Golden Bears went on to win, 78-51.
CSP won the battle down low, outscoring the Wolves 38-20 in the paint. The Golden Bear bench played their part coming up with 21 points in the win. On the glass CSP won the battle, outrebounding the Wolves by a 35-28 margin.
The Golden Bears are back on the road next Friday, Jan. 23 when they head north to take on the Bemidji State Beavers. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
