Golden Bears fall to Bulldogs, sweep Lady Buffs on final day in Colorado

Nold leads the way for CSP with 23 kills and 15 digs on the day

DENVER – The No. 11 Concordia-St. Paul volleyball team (4-3) wrapped up play at the 2025 Colorado Premier Challenge on Saturday afternoon, falling to No. 7 Ferris State (5-2) 3-0 in the early afternoon before sweeping No. 5 West Texas A&M (6-3) in the second and final match of the day on the campus of MSU Denver. 

MATCH 1: Ferris State 3, Concordia-St. Paul 0
The Golden Bears opened the day with a three-set loss to No. 7 Ferris State, falling 25-22, 25-19, and 26-24 in straight sets. The Bulldogs finished the match with 41 kills and a .211 hitting percentage while the Golden Bears hit .159 with 33 kills. CSP held a 10-7 edge in blocks, but Ferris State led 51-44 in digs and 37-33 in assists.

Libero Cassie Sieling led all players in the match with 12 digs while her sister Ellie Sieling joined her in double figures with 11 digs and six kills.

Sophomore Makenna Nold was the only Golden Bear in double figures on offense with 10 kills, nine digs, and three total blocks. Junior Mehlyana Straub added six kills and four total blocks for CSP.

Kaelyn Snoozy and Kelsey Cooper contributed six and five kills, respectively with Cooper also leading all players in the match with five block assists.

Reagan Hickey paced the offense with 30 set assists for the Golden Bears.

For Ferris State, Gabby Piazza led all players in the match with 14 kills.

The match marked just the fifth meeting between the two teams all time, with Ferris State now owning a 3-2 edge in the series.

MATCH 2: Concordia-St. Paul 3, West Texas A&M 0
Trailing 11-10 early in the opening set of match two, the Golden Bears ripped off a streak of 10 points in the following 12 serves to take a commanding 20-13 lead that eventually led to a 25-20 win.

CSP never trailed in set two, holding a narrow lead throughout most of the frame before winning seven of the final nine points to secure a comfortable 25-17 set win.

In the third and final set, Concordia found itself trailing 15-14 near the midpoint. From there, the Bears claimed nine of the next 11 points and cruised to a 25-21 win to complete the sweep.

For the match, the Golden Bears hit .275 with 52 kills while the Lady Buffs hit just .139 with 31 kills. CSP also led in assists (48-29), digs (49-42), and service aces (3-1).

Freshman Kaelyn Snoozy had her best match as a Golden Bear thus far, tying for the team lead with 13 kills while posting a .355 hitting percentage. Nold matched her with 13 kills of her own and added six digs and a service ace.

The only other Golden Bear in double figures on defense was libero Cassie Sieling with 10 digs.

Ellie Sieling was a key contributor on both offense and defense for Concordia, leading all players with 11 digs while adding nine kills on .316 hitting. Sophomore

Kelsey Cooper was CSP's most efficient player on offense, hitting .467 with nine kills while adding a pair of block assists.

Mehlayna Straub added seven kills, two digs, and two total blocks for Concordia.

It was the seventh meeting all time between the Golden Bears and Lady Buffs with Concordia now owning a 5-2 head-to-head record against West Texas A&M.

The Golden Bears will now return home and shift their focus to the conference schedule when they host NSIC newcomer Jamestown at 6 p.m. on Friday, September 19 at the Gangelhoff Center.
