ST. PAUL, Minn. – Mauer and St. Paul are synonymous, and anyone who ventures to Marshall and Hamline Avenues in St. Paul associates Tommy Mauer with Concordia University, St. Paul.

Tom Mauer, the 30-year employee of CSP, has announced his retirement as assistant athletic director and facility manager. The role has been filled with an internal promotion of Jon Medlo, who transitions from the football sidelines as an assistant coach to Mauer's administrative position. The two have been working together since early in the spring semester to ensure a seamless transition.

Mauer will remain connected with the University as he continues as an assistant softball coach, a role he added to his list of titles at CSP in 2011.

"In 1995, accepting the offer to take a job at Concordia University was the best decision I've ever made. I've seen incredible growth with Concordia athletics in my 30 years: moving to NCAA Division II, winning championships, hosting championships, increasing our sports and staffing – all the growth you could ask for in a 30-year career. But the best part of my job is the people I work with every day. I've spent my work days hanging around college athletes who are driven and highly successful, I've been fortunate enough to work for six different athletic directors and I've had the best bosses you could ask for. I've worked with incredible coaches and administrators on the athletics side, and I have so much respect and admiration for the folks on the academic side who have helped cultivate the students I've worked with to be successful and prepared for their post-CSP lives."

Mauer has been with Concordia athletics since 1995, four years before the transition to NCAA Division II membership and affiliation with the Northern Sun (NSIC) began in the 1999-2000 academic year. In addition to overseeing the athletics facilities, Mauer was an assistant baseball coach including one year as the interim head coach in the 1999 season, the last of the NAIA and UMAC-era.

Mauer and his staff were responsible for set-up and take-down of all home athletic events at Sea Foam Stadium, Gangelhoff Center and the baseball (Barnes Field) / softball (Carlander Field) complex. He also assisted or oversaw the scheduling of athletic practices, facility maintenance and repair.

"It's hard to imagine CSP without Tom Mauer on the sidelines for every event," said Concordia-St. Paul Athletic Director Regan McAthie. "I'm personally grateful for the 13 years I was able to work with and learn from Tom, as he has an incredible wealth of experience and CSP-specific knowledge. Among other things, he will be missed for his playful demeanor, ability to stay calm under pressure and solution-oriented attitude, but mostly for the genuine love and pride he has for all things Golden Bear Athletics."

He spearheaded the acquisition of MSHSL basketball consolation round and third-place games to be played on campus, and maintained strong relationships with the high school league to ensure long-term success of the events, among other major events that have come to campus as a result of Mauer's relationship-building personality and service-oriented leadership.

The 1978 graduate of Harding High School in St. Paul played baseball and football at Minnesota State University (formerly Mankato State), graduating in 1982. A longtime official, Mauer is known for his work on the hardwood, reffing basketball games at the Division I level including multiple seasons as a Big Ten referee, has reffed the NCAA Division II championships along with several NCAA regional and NSIC tournaments.
