SIOUX FALLS, S.D. - Concordia-St. Paul (21-29, 17-23 NSIC) had its season come to a conclusion on Saturday afternoon at Sioux Falls Stadium in a 5-4 walk-off loss to Sioux Falls (29-26, 25-15 NSIC).
The one-run defeat is Concordia's 18th game of the season decided by two runs or less (9-9) and 11th game decided by one run (5-6). CSP finished the season in 11th in the final NSIC standings, but just a game out of ninth, two games out of seventh and three games out of sixth while playing 36 percent of its games two runs overall and 35 percent of its NSIC games in two runs or less situations.
Sophomore right-handed pitcher
Ian Segna turned in a stellar final performance of the season, issuing just two hits and a walk over five innings. He struck out three and was only tagged for one run, leaving with a 4-1 lead and in line for his seventh victory. The outing lowered his season ERA to 3.61 in 57.1 innings overall and 3.16 in 10 NSIC appearances (nine starts) over 51.1 innings, fourth in the league ERA title race.
He carried a no-hitter into the fourth, issuing just one walk to the first 11 batters he faced until allowing a one-out solo home run in the fourth inning. He allowed a single to start the fifth inning, but promptly induced a 5-4-3 double play and another grounder to end the inning and close the book on his season.
Concordia's lineup went to work immediately, as senior
Kal Brohmer drew a one-out walk, stole second, advanced to third on a ground out and scored on senior
Bennett McCollow's RBI double to right center. The duo would do it again in the fifth inning, turning a 3-1 lead into a 4-1 margin as Brohmer drew his second one-out walk, stole second and scored on McCollow's RBI single through the left side.
Brohmer went 0-3 on the day, but drew a pair of walks, stole a pair of bases and scored a pair of runs while McCollow went 2-3 with a pair of RBIs.
McCollow would be lifted in the fifth for pinch runner
Jack Setterlund, who stole second and third base before being left 90 feet from a 5-1 lead.
In between the Brohmer/McCollow runs, CSP picked up a pair of runs in the second inning when
Will Husemann and
Jeremy McGuigan had back-to-back one-out singles and each moved into scoring position on
Eric Berg's ground out to short.
Senior
Koby McBroome followed with a two-out, two-run double to center for the 3-0 lead after two innings. He went 2-5 with the double and two RBIs on the day.
After the fifth inning, CSP wouldn't put a runner in scoring position until a two-out, two-base error sent
Trett Joles to second base where he was left in scoring position. In the ninth, McGuigan led off with a single, was sacrificed to second, moved to third for on the second out but left on third.
Concordia's bullpen received solid set-up work from
Leo Bustos with a shutout sixth and
Andrew Boeser with a shutout seventh as the duo each had a strikeout, didn't allow a hit while throwing 29 pitches combined to seven batters.
USF picked up a run off senior
Reece Piontek with a triple and a double to start the eighth, but the senior was able to work out of it with Joles throwing the runner out stealing third for the first out before Piontek picked up a strikeout and a ground out to preserve a 4-2 lead.
In the Cougar ninth, USF opened with a pair of walks and a double, forcing senior
Fritz Meyer from the game. Senior
Jack Greenlun issued an intentional walk, with CSP's defense executing a 6-2-3 double play for the first two outs, keeping the Cougars from scoring. But with second and third with two outs, a walk loaded the bases to set-up the USF game-winning two-run single.
McGuigan had a strong final performance, going 3-3 with a walk and a run.
